Varmit Control

What do ya'll do to prevent pests destroying almost mature bunches? Shotgun, cover bunches w/ bags, rodent poison? Here in SW FL I am always having problems with raccoons and squirrels. They love to bite a little on each fruit and they found my pineapples this week.

Pepper spray. You can make it yourself or buy it pre-mixed at any garden center. It won't hurt the plant or the varmints, but they stop nibbling on your stuff.

Get a dog! Just kidding. It is amazing how all of us have different pests. I have the gopher colony from hell. They took down a full sized double Mahoi in bloom and two unknowns. I have spent hundreds of dollars and wrapped every thing in the ground in wire. Good luck with your pests.

I have skunks that come every night and dig in my yard. I don't know how many times they have uprooted my blueberries , and dug so deep around my banana plants . They are after grubs. Should I put something down to kill the grubs or should I use a pepper spray around all my plants? Any suggestions ?

A well placed projectile to the noggin is always effective. I have taken down 7 Javelina in the past weeks that have been eating the pumpkins and melons. Javelinas can be aggressive towards humans sometimes as well. A woman was attacked here a few months ago while walking her dogs.

Tony,

If they really are after grubs in your lawn you can treat with an number of insecticides that will take out the grubs. There are a few good granular products that you can spread on your lawn. If you'd rather take a more natural approach, do a search for something called Milky Spore. It is a biological that attacks and kills the grubs (similar to BT for caterpillars). I can't remember what name it is marketed under.
