Default Varietal Name vs. Grocery Name

I am having a hard time putting a specific variety with a specific type of banana.

Which varieties are marketed as Baby, Manzano, and Burro.

Default Re: Varietal Name vs. Grocery Name

Baby= (AA Sucrier Group): Nino, Pisang Mas, Sucrier (many other names exist but these are some commonly seen ones)

Manzano= (AAB Silk Group): Manzano, Apple, Silk Fig... (again, there are many more but these are common)

Burro= (ABB Bluggoe Group): Orinoco, Bluggoe, Largo (same story, many more names also exist)

Manzano and Burro are both fair variety names. "Baby" however is just a marketing name and not used to refer to the plants in any official manner in the banana growing side of things.

Do any of the FHIA varieties fit into those groupings or are they just totally different because I believe they are all tetraploid.

The FHIA bananas do not belong to any of the above groups. The groups listed above are just 3 of the many dozens that exist.

Patty, what part are you having trouble understanding? I'm sure Gabe or someone else could help if you ask.

To confuse you even more, "Babies" may also be Ladyfingers or Oritos. Check the country of origen, because that will help you determine what they are....

(IE Costa Rican "Baby" bananas are likely to be Ladyfingers or Ninos; Ecuadorian or Colombian "Baby" bananas are more likely to be Oritos; those from French Guayana or other French-speaking areas are likely to be Sucrier and so on...)

Hey Patty,
I posted this link sometime somewhere before. It is a nice read and gives quite a good explanation on the various cultivar groups, etc., Give it a shot. I hope it helps.
