Default USDA banana germplasm catalog

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, but it brand new and was just brought to my attention:

Am I correct in assuming that a hobbyist cannot request specimens from this source? I'm not a scientist; I'm just a gardener.

Anyone can request, but actually receiving the material is another matter. As a bonafide researcher I've requested material many times with no response. Generally they would discourage casual hobbyists as it is quite an effort to prep the plants and send them off. Other USDA genebanks maintaining seed collections are a lot more likely to freely send small seed samples.

I know about UCDavis for ficus and other starts so I was wondering about the tropical repositories. I've never requested any plant material but might someday. Thanks for clarifying.

I haven't seen this posted elsewhere. Quite a resource and very useful for IDing cultivars.

Wow Gabe that is surprising to read and never would've expected that. As a bonafide farm we've received the material upon every request, however it does take about 3 or 4 days after placing the request to receive the plantlets.

The USDA TARS is incredibly helpful and as farmers we are truly blessed by their dedication and service.

Hi Kat, there is an old thread explaining how to request and the miami repository is probably the easiest to qualify for. Basically you can receive any material (free of charge) that is not readily available commercially, Geo can probably help you further.

If you do request from the PR repository, I'd recommend the

Manini
Patupi
Tigua
Pioneira
Goldfinger
Guaran Enano
Nino Enano
TMB 2x 9128-3
FHIA-21
and all the plantains.
