OH beautiful!! Are your little nanas staying on?

Mine all fell off unpollinated I guess. One of my bronze pups is putting out a bloom though! Could not believe it. I thought I was through for the year.

Anyway.. LOOKING GOOD!!

Deb

Scot,

If you really want some blooms try growing velutina, laterita, or some of the many ornata cultivars. They are amongst some of the quickest and easiest of the ornamental types to flower. They are all easy to maintain in a pot as well.

The soft pink flower is SUPER pretty! I love it. The leaves on the right picture are a gorgeous green tone. I'm glad to see your hard work pay off. After all the cabages you've fed them

After looking in the Wiki, Am I reading it right that they bloom after just 4-6 months of growth. So one should expect a flower the first year?

this is my first flowers. i had them in pots over the winter and they grew pretty well. when i put them outside in the ground is when they really took off. i planted them outside the last week of april and i now have the blooms. so i would say that it was about 4 months from planting to bloom.

I'd say that's about right. Several factors can contribute to how soon they flower but all of these are generally smaller-growing than most of the edibles and have much more slender pseudostems and they just flower quicker. If you had a greenhouse or could keep your ornamental bananas warm enough and growing throughout the winter they could potentially bloom year-round.

I will be germinating banana seeds like a wildcat over the winter. Not only will I be doing that, but a lot of other tropical plant seeds will be going into the germinator. Also plan to do a lot of TC. So, next year, with any luck, there will be banana blossoms everywhere. Well, at least that's the plan.
