33 & 34 deg @ 5 & 6 am; dropped to 31.5 deg & 7:15 am with light frost. It's 7:50 am now and 33 deg. ... it will take a day or 2 to see how bad the bana leaves burnt.

They might be laughing because you have your days mixed up. Naked Gardening Day is always the first Saturday in May. This year it is May the 2nd.

You guys that live in the area of light freeze should try letting the sprinkler run on your bananas during the freezing temps. 50f + water from a hose will probably protect your plants. I am guessing this will work down to about 25f.

here May would be a cook off.

made it to 34 last night. those all night frosts are just as damaging to a p-stem as a freeze might be.

These are just the first new leaves of spring starting to push out. There are more to come behind them so a little frost burn wont really hurt the plants. The first day of spring is only about 23 days away. ....

I've been busy with another project and haven't updated this thread as promised.

Last weekend I trimmed the nanas back in the Large patch and took these pictures. The nanas were about to start putting out new leaves for the spring. These pictures are to show the start of the season.

Pic !

Pic 2

Pic 3

All of these plants are recovering from the winter. I didn't lose any.

Late this afternoon I found the RajaPuri in the Small Nana Patch had pushed out Bloom. I've been watching for it but didn't check it yesterday.

Here is another pic of the Raja Puri bunch.

An update & pic of the Orinoco bunch with no leaves. This bunch bloomed in February after the last hard freeze. The bunch is looking great.

The bunch count for the 2020 season is at 2 now.

An over view of the Small Nana Patch.

Yesterday morning I was checking the nanas in the small patch I found this little bloom. The bloom is slightly less than 1/2 the size of other Orinoco blooms. There are 2 small leaves and the flag. So the count for this nana patch is now 3.

2 New Blooms ... I've had a computer problem for the past week so I couldn't update this thread until today.

Last Wednesday I found the 1st bloom in the large nana patch. It is a Dwf Namwah.

Today in the Small Patch I found the 1000 Finger finally Bloomed. It has 2 leaves and the Flag leaf. I thought this one was ready to bloom and made it though the winter without loosing the bud.

The bunch/bloom count is now at 5. Woohoo....

Looking at the 1000 finger pic, you see a big nana left behind the bloom. From the frontside of the patch that bloom is completely hidden. For several days I keep looking for a bloom but didn't see one. There were no new leaves growing so I thought the plant was choking. So I was looking close for the choke on the backside.

Likely I will cut the bunch at 7 or 8 hands. Dose anyone have any suggestions to mature these in our short growing season? I have about 8 months left until first frost.

That's amazing how the Orinoco bunch is developing without any leaves. Tough nanner!

Although not many leaves, I think you've got plenty of time with the best months to come to mature those bananas. Don't cut the flower off nor prune any hands too early/short. I think that caused my blue java bunch to rot as I was worried there were too many hands to develop with a single leaf.

Looking good!

PS you can fix that sideways photo presentation by using the "edit" button near the bottom of the page when the photo is shown in your gallery after posting it up. Kinda hard to find but its there. Edit function will then allow you to rotate clockwise or counter clockwise as the case may be. Sideways pictures give me a headache.

The 1000 finger makes hands until the bunch reaches the ground (hence the name). I don't think there is time or that and mature the nanas. This is my first 1000 Finger Bunch and why I asked for advice. I know I have lost 2 or 3 bunches to pstem freezing in the past.

Found another bunch! ... This morning while checking the Small Nana Patch, I found another bud just pushed out.

And .... an update photo on the Dec. 2019 bunch with only one ragged leaf. It's growing and growing to make it. The flower is hanging at about 10 ft. May be I can cut it off in the net few days.

The Bunch count is now .... Small Patch => 5 .... Large Patch => 1 ... Total for 2020 season=> 6 Bunches and growing .... I need more fertilizer!

The Large Nana Patch, I check yesterday for any new buds and didn't see anything promising. ....But ... this morning the Dwf Orinoco has a new bud. this is the first time this mat has fruited since planting a year & half ago.

Also this is a pic of another Dwf Namwah with what appears to be a pre-flag (center) there may be a flag & bud in another couple of days.

Large Nana Patch now has 2 blooms and another on the way.

Total 2020 season count is 7 blooms. ... I still need more fertilizer.

Update again: This morning in the Small Nana Patch at my house I found a new Dwf Orinoco bud. It's small but there in the middle of picture. This makes 6 Buds for the Small Patch.

At the Large Patch last week I found 2 buds and this morning 2 more Buds.

This was the 'pre flag' pictured earlier. The bud finally pushed out -6/17.

This Bud was already opening: 6/17.

Picture of the same bunch above this morning -6/24.

Note: This bud is much bigger than last years Dwf Namwahs & this years 1st bud pictured above. The fingers do have a faint blue tint. I believe the recent rains washed the coloring off. So I'm wondering if this is the regular Namwah or a Blue Java mixed into this mat. ??? I'll figure it out later.

I also found 2 new Dwf Namwah buds this morning.
1st one:

2nd one: ... Note, this Bud & pstem is growing on the same corm as the large Bud picture above.

Count for the Large Patch is now 6. 5 Dwf Namwahs & 1 Dwf Orinoco. Total for both Patches to date is 12 bud/bunches.
