Trouble With Shipping

Hi all,

Have any of you in California had trouble getting plants mailed to you from other states?

I ask this because we ordered some plants and they have yet to arrive and they were sent Priority Mail a week ago. I asked at the Post Office about them and was told they may be delayed at the agriculture inspection.

I hope they are still alive when they arrive.

Eric

Did you order from a greenhouse that is licensed to ship to California, or did you buy a pup off of just a regular Joe from another state?

Hi,

We ordered the plants from a nursery in Indiana. I have never ordered plants from out of state before and know nothing about licensing. I checked the nursery's website and they don't say anything about having a license or not.

To ship plants to California requires a special license or certificate. Usually, the nursery's website will have the info posted when you order, and THEY should know about whether are not they are certified to ship to California, if you call them. When I ordered my first bananas from a Georgia nursery, they stated they had the certificate, and the information was included with my order when it arrived. If they are not certified, you may not get them. (I'm not sure how strict inspection is, mine got through with ants in the corms...) You may want to call the nursery and ask about their certification IF your plants don't show up. They MAY just be going through inspection, however.

We ordered them from Northern Tropicals. We are looking for interestingly colored plants, like Siam Ruby, etc. I am new to banana plants so I don't have a collection yet.

Hi!

Sandy contacted me and we are trying to locate the plants. She definitely shipped them but we don't know where the plants are right now.

Sandy at Northern Tropicals is being very helpful. Northern Tropicals ships in soil-less mix and is licensed to ship to California so the plants don't need to go through inspection. It is starting to look like a Post office mess up.

My main concern is for the health of the plants.

Good luck, we know what it is to wait for the arrival. Our mail box is 1/2 mile from us and is black plastic. Daily trips to make sure nothing get baked in it. Have gotten seed that I'm sure was destroyed by the heat in there.

This has happened to me on my first purchase. Go to your local post office and ask them to check on a package for you.If you are not home when they try and deliver the package they return them to the Post Office. They are suppose to leave you a notice that they tried to deliver and no one was home. I believe in three days they are suppose to try delivering again. In my case they never left a notice and never tried to re-deliver.After 19 days I found my package at the Post Office,1/4 mile from my house. All twelve plants were fried. There answer was we will investigate what a joke.

Well, the mystery of the missing banana plants has been solved! The plants were shipped in soil-less mix but an ag inspection dog here in California hit on the package so they held it in ag inspection. Northern Tropicals faxed them
their ag shipping certificate but they wanted a Japanese Beetle certificate too (Japanese Beetles don't even lay eggs in soil, I am told). Of course, Northern Tropicals doesn't have a Japanese Beetle certificate...why should they?!

So...the plants are being sent back to Northern Tropicals. I hope the plants arrive back there alive.

Sandy is great to deal with...she will send the plants rinsed free of the soilless soil.

My stupid state!

Who told you that ? This what I found.

After feeding for a day or two, the females leave feeding sites in the afternoon and burrow into the soil to lay eggs at a depth of 2 to 4 inches
