Trouble in Corm-Ville — Need Advice?
 

Hi there!

Hope everyone had a nice winter. :-)

Anyway, I need some advice...

Last summer was my first summer growing a banana plant, an Ensete Maurelii. I overwintered my Ensete using the dry storage method, as per the many videos found on YouTube.

Plant was stored upright, bare root, bagged in a large paper bag and left in my garage at about 50 F. for entire winter.

Today I decided to plant and move outside. When removing it from its paper bag storage, I discovered it had grown a few long and lanky leaves (a good sign, right). Anyway, I cut the stalk just below where leaves were growing to freshen it up.

My only concern, and it’s a big one, is the corm portion is kinda moist a soft, not hard like it was when I put it into dry storage last fall Anyway, just the same I planted it.

So my question is this: Has anyone planted a wet and soft corm before and still had success?

I’m a bit worried, that for whatever reason, it won’t do well this year... and supplies are limited should I need a replacement.

I suppose I should just wait and see if plant pushes a leaf bud, but I’m too anxious and annoyed that I may have botched my dry storage?

Any advice and or encouragement will be welcomed!

It is what it is. And it will be what it will be. if you can do the following, plant it. Nice well draining soil that will be moist but not soggy, and somewhere will it will be 80F or more so that it is stimulated to grow, and when new leaves emerge, they will need sun. And, as I said, it will do what it will do. Aside from providing the right conditions, you don't have any control of this situation.

Thanks for your input! Fingers crossed that plant’s corm will recovery and “firm up”.
