Default The Toughest Banana!

Here is an interesting article I found. The Cubans are breeding a new banana to withstand hurricanes. More messing with nature...

Question Re: The Toughest Banana!

Aye caramba! I guess they're too proud to try some of the FHIA dwarves or my new favorite D. Nam wah for example. If they're growing them from seed they can't feed anyone.....have to wonder what the motivation is. Thanks for posting.

Something strange there Margie - can't quite put my finger on it! Perhaps the cross will provide edible bananas - but as Bob says - why bother?

I believe that the news report is in error about "seeds" and the reality is they are working with in-vitro cells as stated later in the article. Since both of the parents mentioned are seedless varieties, the "GMO" may just be cross-breeding by protein splicing.

I re-read the article and just noticed that the last line refers to how the Cuban bananas will "fare against Pacific Typhoons"!!!!!

Besides referring to edible, seeded bananas and Cuba weathering Pacific storms...we know this journalist is one finger short of a hand! LOL
