Timing/managing mats

I’m trying to figure out how to manage my mat so I can actually get some fruit! My plants either bloom too late in the fall or they get triggered by the first chill of winter, November/December. Then I end up losing my leaves to frost. No nanners. I’m on the line of 9a/b, in Florida. I get plenty of sword suckers all year. I’d like to try to have one get about half grown before winter and bloom around June/July/Aug with another sucker coming for the following year at roughly the same timing. I’m growing Namwa, Dwarf Brazilian, Pitogo, and adding Raja Puri & Kokopo.

You could influence it some by choosing the "right" suckers, but without every-day-the -same weather like Panama, it is much harder to do. Ideally you would want flowering in the spring, but that would require a plant close to flowering that would overwinter without loosing leaves and/or vigor. That is a bit like the holy grail. Tall Brazilian, Misi Luki and Fhia-18 seem to take winter better and might be candidates to try.

And I just watched a video from a guy in the panhandle that has had much success with sweetheart banana. It definitely got my ears perked up because all of my bananas suffered cold damage this winter.

I also live at the northern end of 9b in Florida. I have a Raja Puri, and a Kokopo. For these two bananas, if you can protect later-season in-ground sword suckers from the cold during the winter so that they take off in the spring, you should get fruit in plenty of time before it gets cold again. As for my Namwa, I really haven't tried to time it. Even when it flowered at the beginning of December, I still got fruit in the spring. (maybe I just got lucky with a warm winter)

I've also read that using MOP helps to get correctly timed fruiting as well as helping it to fill faster.
