Can I ask if your basement is heated? I canít decide if I should cut them to the ground or dig mine up? We had our first frost here last night.

My basement is 60ļF in the winter, small windows allow a little bit of sunlight. In March I will start some Elephant Ear tubers and then I will start running some lights. It will be near the Bananas in pots, so they will get a little more light then. If they are bone dry they will get a shot of water, the bare root plants won't get water until it's warm enough to move them to the garage. I am going to try and winter a couple Banana plants over in the garden. I haven't had any luck the last 2 years but I didn't really protect them well. This year I will protect them better and see what happens.

Got my first plant from my brother in 1993, some do rot and some choke. It's a process sometimes waking them up. I put them in the garage when it's warm enough but the nights are still cool. Put the bare root plants in a pot cut a few inches off the top and start giving them water. watch for growth. If not pushing out much cut them back some more. If they are choked I keep cutting back until I'm to the choke. They may split out the side before I get them cut back far enough. Some will rot, smaller ones especially, but I put 25-30 plants up, so I still have plenty. I had 2 rot this year that I cut off at the corm, they grew to 6' and had 5 pups each. Here's a pic of one I cut back last year. I have one or two fruit every year but don,t have a long enough season for them to mature.

Sorry, all the pups grew up, Mom had to be cut back to the choke. Mom was 8', cut six to eight inches at a time until till it started pushing. Then pop goes the Banana's. I used to be afraid to be to aggressive cutting them back until I had a few split near the bottom and put out Banana's.
