Hey all,

I have three baby bananas I got from A&B and they were planted a month and a half ago in pots that I know now are too big for them. They have not grown at all. One's leaves wilted and the tiny pseudostem is turning darker and darker. It's rotting! I took one of them out of the pot, cut off some big dead roots, saw some white roots (left those) and put it in another smaller pot and didn't water it. It's not fairing well.
One of the plants I got was actually was nothing but a corm with some ping growth but this hasn't grown a mm either and it tends to want to get black on top. I likely will lose the three plants and the money I paid for them, but for a last ditch effort, what should I do? Take out the remaining two, cut off dead roots, and put in small pot? What about fungicide? Do I soak them and in what? Nothing too expensive but something that I can get at Home Depot or Lowes...
Any info would be very helpful. I feel so stupid for putting them in big pots...but I mean this is Phoenix AZ after all!! Oh well...

Weird, my FHIA 3 from them bit the big one now also.

Zacarias - just leave them be for a while with only a little dampening from time to time. One of mine rotted away completely above ground and I resisted the impulse to dig it up. Nearly 5 months later it put up a pup - obviously the roots had been ok. Likewise an old dead mat suddenly put up a shoot. Have patience and don't give up or keep digging them up. They are very tough if they are not wet.

Yes, resist the urge to water too much and they might come back for you. You never know.

Sounds like root rot. If you have any corm left, take them out of the soil you have them in. Get some new STERILE pots and soil, and drench the corms in a fungicide mix for a while, making sure to cut what rotten roots you can find as much as possible. Your chances are slim, but I have made it work before. I used RD-20 as a fungicide, but I'm not sure even if it's commercially available (we have it in the greenhouse on campus). 2 tsp./gal. works best. Good luck.

I agree with big dog. For them to come back, is fairly unlikely though since they were so small. Mine was a size bigger and dying at the same time, and now it's toast.

i use 2 table spoons per gallon of liquid copper, works great for me
