Default Are there Musa basjoo that are way taller than others?

Hi

I have in my zone 7 two Musa basjoo that I got from different sources. One is way taller than the other.
Does anyone know if some basjoo are taller than others and where I could buy the taller kind?

Thxs

Pat

Post some pics.
A musa basjoo is a musa basjoo. Sounds like one (or both) of your plants could be misidentified.
Or stress, food, sun/shade, watering issues

I would think that as long as there are two strains that one would be taller than the other...just like people, dogs, etc. I think with velutina there is a larger strain and they start so easily from seed there should be a lot of variation out there. Musa basjoo is more likely to be either a clone or a pup off of a clone but you'd think there would have to be at least two strains out there. That being said I have gotten pups from a friend and never had mine get nearly as large and I've given my friend at least one pup that never did well for him yet my plants thrived. So...that's a long answer to end up so vague but I certainly don't think all basjoos are the same.

I would suggest that you post your queries in either Cold Hardy Bananas since members reading that section are more likely to grow basoos or in Banana Identification which is the designated area.

Just thought you all might find this of interest.

Just my opinion....
It all depends how and where you sight your plant.

I have friends/students whom have all purchased their plants from the same supplier and all their plants are of different size.
Mine are some of the smallest....it is nothing I am doing wrong. It is where I have chosen to site the plant.
Locally there is 5 foot pstem difference....up to 12+ feet in height with other local growers.

You might find this link of interest also.
This is the real deal.
The plants in the article are hard to find.

I think there is a more cold hardy variant called Sapporo from some Islands near Japan somewhere, and perhaps another called Sakhalin. But if anything it would be shorter(Common trait with cold hardy plants). But there is very little info on it I can find, and I doubt its very common, and like lots of other stuff that is supposed to be different (California Gold/Orinoco),it might possibly just be plain Basjoo. Basjoo seed does not seem very viable, I have maybe seen 1 mention of them germinating, and they are probably mostly pup clones. If you had some seed grown ones, there would be different traits for each plant, an example would be there are some Musa Velutina strains that are more cold hardy than others. Of course there are always sports of different plants, but they are usually rare. Most likely the taller plant had a more developed corm than the shorter, or like has happened here, maybe just a more fertile part of the yard.
