Green Fried - Tostones

Green Boiled

Excellent cooking banana

Ripe uncooked

The French-type, False Horn, & Horn were all very similar in flavor & texture.

The flavor & texture of the FHIA-21 is more like a good dessert banana.

Ripe cooked - Maduros

The FHIA-21 doesn't make a quality maduros, slightly better flavor than the Pacific cooking banana Huamoa but very similar in texture minus the center strands. Definitely not acceptable for maduros rellenos.

All the plantains were great with the French-type probably having the best texture.

The FHIA-21 is definitely worth growing especially if you prefer dessert bananas over maduros. Grows well in very poor soil and produces bunches in excess of 80 lb., fingers are large but will easily bruise.

Not sure if don had them last time I was there a few weeks ago - he has had a short supply on the plantain plants lately I think.

Seems like a winner if your intentions is a high yielding, tolerant, cooking banana.

I'd take one in a heartbeat if I saw it locally.

I gotcha, he had them last time I was there, but the wife said I could only get 1 new plant and I chose a goldfinger instead. Next time...

I would recommend the French Red over the FHIA-21.

It's a true plantain with 60 lb. bunches and it's beautiful.

Good Luck with that, I doubt his goldfinger is a goldfinger.

Unless of course you're growing in Fort Myers, then anything can be a goldfinger.

I get more compliments about my maduros from ARH than anything else. My Haitian customers seem to really like the french type plantains, I don't know why. I will have to wait a while on the FHIA-21, a storm blew it over with a good sized bunch on it. At any rate, I will be able to propagate it this summer.

The french-type plantains are true-plantains and all of my customers really like them... great for making tostones.

It's surprising your FHIA-21 fell down, I've found them to have a very strong root system. I planted them on top of the ground and just kicked some dirt around them and even removing the pups didn't seem to effect them.

I've been increasing my holdings of the french-type while reducing the false-horns & horns. Marketed as cooking bananas, it lowers the cost for the consumer and raises the profits for the farmer.

At any rate, I'm looking forward to getting the Musa French Red and French Maiden into full production.

I get very high winds seasonally and then during certain thunderstorms we have 50+ mph gusts. First time I have a had plant blow over during the plant crop. It's much more common with mats that are over 4 years old.
