Tall Orinoco

Re: Tall Orinoco
That's definitely a bummer! I'm wondering if your soil was very wet or something as I cannot imagine an otherwise healthy banana just falling over due to the extra weight a bud added. Have you recently had a lot of rain? How high have your winds been lately?
The only time I ever lost a trunk like that was a couple of years ago when Hurricane Rita passed just to the east of where I live. I came home from Ft. Worth where we stayed for a few days to find one of my pseudostems full of ftuit on the ground. Luckily, they were mostly mature and I was able to cut the hand off and save them. I was actually not too upset, considering that was the only damage I had whatsoever. Sorry about your banana. |

Re: Tall Orinoco
The pseudostem broke about 1.5 ft off the ground. It was leaning pretty good with the weight before it snapped. I just didn't get to it in time to support it. The TOs are a lot slender than the DOs. I'm assuming they are a bit tougher in their natural habitat, where they don't have to recover from cold exposure.

Re: Tall Orinoco
Mine broke just a few inches above ground level. I was heart-broken about it too! Not only did it have fruit on it, it had 38 fingers! That would have been over twice the amount of fingers I've ever got off of a bunch. Oh well. I'm still a bit sad about it, but I have two more flowers to concentrate on, lol. However, there are only about 16 fingers on the first one...but better than nothing.

Sorry for your loss
It's really important to prop your pseudostems when they're blooming! Better safe than sorry :weightliftingnaner: |
