Tall Bananas...
Hi All!
A new friend of mine in Washington State had a banana plant that reached 30ft. and fruited last year. She is digging for pics as I post. What Banana or Plantain cultivars would reach these heights? Any info appreciated...I am digging throught the Wiki! Will post pics when they come avaliable! Thanks, :) ~Cheryl |

Re: Tall Bananas...
30' is tall even for here. Giant Plantain and occasionally Maqueño get that big here, but only in bumper years. Other than that, you'll be looking at the Ensetes, not the Musas.

Re: Tall Bananas...
Maybe she means 30' to the top of the leaves? I have Hawaiian Apples that tall if you count the leaves.

Re: Tall Bananas...
Oh, if you count to the top of the leaves you can include a bunch more.

Re: Tall Bananas...
I am relaying questions to her, via e-mail, as I field your responses.
She has good soil, near former volcanic activity. 9b area. Am waiting & wanting to know with you!! :) ~Cheryl |
Re: Tall Bananas...
"Banana made fruit last year, very small bananas and I cannot remember if they were red or yellow.
No red in the stem, and the 6 foot tall new one this year has a 2 1/2-3 inch wide base on it so far...I do not recall how big the base got on last years. 30-plus feet with the leaves..and the leaves grew 4 to 5 feet long at least...maybe longer The original plant has died off." This is the 6 foot pup... Any Ideas?! :) ~Cheryl |

Re: Tall Bananas...
Ya, looks like M. basjoo to me to. I have seen them pretty tall, not 30ft, but tall. Bananas should always be measured from the ground to the top of the pseudostem when reporting a height.
