This is a bordelon that I bought from lowes was in a 8" pot which had not seen water in days.
Banana Gallery - IMG_2695 Banana Gallery - IMG_2694 My question is What are these suckers around the base, and what should I do with them and when, let them grow, remove them and if so do I pot them or trash them.

IMHO -It really depends on your preference, since it is an ornamental banana. If you want a single large trunk then remove them, if you want a large foilage clump then leave them. If you want new plants, then remove as many as you want.

Hey there jim, I call them suckers because your momma plant is small. If your main plant was larger you'll notice bigger stronger babies coming up and they grow fast. If you chop them now they probably won't make it. let them get 16" to 24" tall if you want to save them. I like the group look, let them be....
Notice how fat these little guys that are starting to pop up....nife like leaves are a good way to tell if you have swords. [IMG] |

I just wondered if they would keep the mother from growing well. there were dwarf cavindish there with 3 or 4 pups in an 8 " pot I wish I could have rescued them all maybe one or two more next week.

I'd say leave em be. They look like water suckers, but they pose no harm to the main plant and won't affect its growth significantly. I have seen a LOT of people being paranoid about removing pups recently and don't know why. First off, I would never trash a plant....water or sword...either will turn into a great plant you can divide later and sell/trade/keep. Secondly, 99% of us on the site do NOT own a plantation or anything that would ever necessitate the need for measures such removing water suckers, etc.
So yeah...my vote would be let them be and enjoy their presence. There is no reason to remove them or mess with them. Let them get larger then separate a few into new plants...that's my two copper Lincolns anyway!

As a grower of Bordelon, in a pot also, My Bordelons pup like crazy. I tend to leave them and have seen no ill effects from this. Just separate if you want another one, otherwise they tend to make nice clumps.

I would add Siam Ruby to the prolific pupper category!
