Thats brilliant. Not many people get them that far. Can you tell me a little bit about what you have been feeding it, The amount of light it gets, Soil its in etc. I have 2 here in the uk, One for 5 years. Any info what be great.

I feed it Chicken and Steer manure, Sul Po Mag, home made compost, worm castings, and some EB stone organic plant food twice a year. It's been in the ground for about 22 months. My soil is clay but I try to keep it as loose as possibly by constant amending with compost and manure. During the summer months it gets about 6-7 hours of direct sunlight, and in winter about 2. This last winter I covered it at night with black plastic to help save it from the frost we had here. At the time it was also protected by the canopy of banana leaves from the Ice Creams and Namwah's. Lots of water in the summer, almost none in the winter.

Yes, more than once. Does it make a difference. It's in a large pot, in the conservatory.

You would have much better success at fruiting it if you plant it in the ground and leave it there for a while.
We've determined that moving the SDC around does set you back, but being in a pot and moving it isn't the same thing I meant.. I meant digging it up and replanting it. Although your chances of it fruiting in the pot are very slim, would love to see some pictures if you do get it to, as thats' pretty rare!

Wow, lovely flower. None of mine are big enough to flower I don't think as they are all 1 year olds. I am fascinated by how low light they seem to thrive in when I bring them in for winter. Other bananas would hate it, but they carry of steadily growing with very little light at all! Mine have a tendancy to burn white sometimes in full sun though.

How big was the plant when it flowered? How wide was the stem?

The pseudo stem is about 3 feet tall and about 6" across but was bigger before stripping dead and rotting leaves from the frost.

I was pretty vigilant about removing them until I saw the flower coming. I think I'll just chop them at ground level now.

For size reference this my dog Chica. She stands 20" at the withers. (top of the front shoulders) I tried to adjust the photo so you can see the pseudo stem a little better.

Maybe we should have a Bananas and Pets thread?

Congratulations on the bloom! My SDC's are pretty unlikely to make it that far!

Awesome flower on the SDC! I have been growing this cultivar in the ground in the Houston, TX area for 4 yrs now. I always get tons of growth (relatively speaking, as it is DWARF after all) but it has yet to flower for me. I've traditionally just let it grow with however many pups it puts out, only occasionally taking off one or two as it starts to get out of hand. This year, I removed all pups but one and have been being a bit more diligent about fertilizing and we have just had tons of rain here this spring and so far early summer, so I'm hoping for bloom this year. I'll post if it happens! I'm also growing a High Color Mini in the ground which is doing great and still has fabulous color. I've read that sometimes the color goes away as the get a little larger. Hopefully mine won't.

I would love to see follow-up on this thread. Mitchel, did you take pictures of the fruit? ...and did you get to eat it?

Also, I am wondering if SDC is the same as Truly Tiny? Although on further scrutiny I guess it isn't because my TT doesn't look anything like your Super Dwarf Cavendish.

I am new to bananas and right now only have a very tiny outdoors patio but I am hooked and I am really enjoying this forum!

Hello and welcome Mary. I can't remember if I took pictures but the fruit was very small and never ripened, they just turned black and rotted. I have since completely removed the stand and gave a nice sized potted and rooted pup to my neighbor who has done a great job growing it in a container. It hasn't fruited yet and I doubt it will in the small container but she loves it none the less!
