Storm Damage
 

What do you guys do to your bananas that receive significant storm damage? A couple of my basjoo got torn apart last night. The leaves are broken right where they attach to the pseudostem so they are hanging down and bent funny. It was mostly the newer leaves near the top of the pseudostem.

Just cut the laves off that are broke at the stems. No issues as you can cut the stalk down to the corm and these suckers will grow back.

Ugh, now they look like crap. Two plants lost two big leaves near the top.

You trim the leaves off and leave the p-stem intact. I'd wait till they turn brown, and see if the can still help absorb the sun to help the plant. :^)

I'd cut the leaves off where they got bent off, as they likely won't get enough nutrients in/out due to the crease. I tend to leave a few on though just to see if they will help get some nutrients to the plant. If there is severe damage to the pstem, cut it of below the bend/break....but this doesn't sound to be the case. Damage that you describe shouldn't adversely affect the growth of the plant, but it might look a bit crappy for a bit. No worries, though.

Yeah, two leaves on each musa basjoo got broken right where they attach to the pseudostem. They were already turning brown all the way across where they were beat up, but the leaf was still green. I don't think they would have remained green long though since it looks like the cells were damaged in the break. Go figure they were the two top leaves on the plants, so now they look quite not right...oh well, they'll repair themselves I guess.

Luckily, wind-shredded leaves don't significantly affect the growth of the plant.
