Hi all. I have 4 bananas in my hedge. On one side, an ice cream and mysore spaced 14' apart. On the other, an ice cream and mona lisa spaced 14' apart. Should I be able to fit smaller sized (but not true dwarf) bananas - such as dwarf namwa - right in the middle of those 14' gaps? And, if so, any recommendations for very productive and disease resistant varieties?

Not the varieties or spacing you want, but I can tell you about trying to combine tall and dwarf Brazilian. I was trying to switch two patches, and to make gentle transition, tried putting dwarfs in with the talls, and talls in with the dwarfs. The dwarfs in with talls barely grew, I had to completely remove the talls to get any production at all. But then the dwarfs produced more, or at least that is how it seemed. In the other patch, talls in with the dwarfs - no problem, they easily dominated. These were all way more crowded than your 14' - more like typical backyard 2' apart.

Yes and No.

Depends on width of the patch, in other words, how much squar-footage of root space is there.

If the three plants would be in and east west line, the dwarf would get equal son. If they would be in a north south line, the Dwarf will get a lot of shade.

This is along the fence on the east of my property, so running north to south. I see your point about the shade. The dwarfs will be shaded by the talls to the south and only get some westward sun later in the day. Far from ideal. I'd still like to pop something in those 14' gaps, but I guess I need to get away from bananas and find another spot for that dwarf namwa.

Maybe I will plant coffee in the gap. Seems like that would work better than more bananas (though I would prefer more bananas!)
