Spacing for a banana garden?
While I am growing my bananas for aesthetic reasons I do have an area that I am planting for fruit. What are the recommendations for spacing them. Understandably the variety will help make that determination. I will probably be growing the shorter ones since there is a greater chance of them fruiting and developing the fruit in my area. So how far apart would be right. 8'? 10'? 12'? ??????????????

Re: Spacing for a banana garden?
I think commercial spacing is 10'. I often plant mine in groups of 3, about 6' apart in a triangle pattern, and then leave more space between the groups, in which I have my citrus, stone fruits, etc, etc.

Re: Spacing for a banana garden?
I space my bananas only about 3 feet away from each other, but keep in mind that I dont live in a climate where the grow all year long. I will dig mine up. I think that about 5-10 feet would be a good distance depending on the total height.
I would give the taller bananas a try since I have seen people getting ice cream bananas and even sabas to fruit up north so they should have no problem in FL!

Re: Spacing for a banana garden?
Mine are 5.5 feet apart with nothing but a thick layer of mulch in between.

Re: Spacing for a banana garden?
Charles ----------- Don't remember if we talked about this last nite but 8' spacing is the minimum for limited space to grow naners. I ran my mats in a straight line, 8' apart, down the backyard 100' fence mainly cause of the irrigation.
This setup allows me to plant garden veggs between the naners as well. Most veggs need filtered lite due to the intense sun light we get here in PSL, Fl. With more room I would go 12' between mats and run 2 main pstems a year. Dan Last edited by bananimal : 05-25-2011 at 07:24 PM. Reason: I got more than 2 main pastimes a year -duuuuuh! |

Re: Spacing for a banana garden?
Thanks for the replies. Were I am growing them I think 10’ will work well and that should keep the Nanners happy. Most everything I grow including vegetables receive a thick mulch of leaves up to 8 inches thick. It has never caused a problem.
