Some hill bananas in Jalisco MX(24 pics)
Heading North East of Puerto Vallarta(the road past Home Depot), took a few shots of the Native palms Sabal rosei(short), and Acrocomia aculeata(taller)
Then stopped shortly to look at some clumping bamboo-Rhipidocladum racemiflorum Then up a little higher into a less junglely area, more pastorial. Finally coming to our destination of a little village called San Sebastian, which was a French army outpost a few hundred years ago, but the soilders never left. It wasnīt reachable until a few years ago by auto. (not sure how they got the electricty up there though) Spotted some nice Hedychiums and some bananas(note the pine forest in the background, the town at about 4,500 ft elevation) Next I noticed some very large Bananas that looked lik they had alot of black and wax at the petiole axis. And one that didnīt get propped and seemed to loose alot of itīs color. It also appeared to have barely escaped choking on itīs bunch. Then spotted another varitey of Musa with a less choked appearence. Then heading east on the north edge of town. Then heading north out of town, a strange heavily scarred banana planted mixed with citrus, and coffee. Then directly behind that one another weird banana with undeveloped fruits, an only two flowers per bract (note the two undeveloped fruits in the rear) Then heading still further out of town with the mixed plants(bananas ect) left, and blue Agaves to the right. All the streets were out of stone, no pavement. Open area to the left with more bananas. Then a few more shots of the black petiole axis banana. With me out of focus for referance, but the others were alot taller in the other spot. And then after seeing another black fruiting I realized that the bunch coming out of the p-stem like that was most likey a trait, and not some sort of problem. Then it started raining buckets so we left before rock slides made the road unpassable. Then stopped at the jungle elevation for a few more shots(between rain bursts) of the jungle around a creek before heading home. Then walked upstream through a long culvert following this blue guy, hoping I wouldnīt encounter any snakes or such in the dim light. Finally the nice shot of bamboo I was looking for displaying itīs beautiful cascading habit. |

Thanks, Kyle! I'm hoping to make a little trip down to ole Mexico myself in another month or two...most likely to the Yucatan. Hopefully I'll encounter some bananas myself!

Re: Some hill bananas in Jalisco MX(24 pics)
Yeah I live about 2 hours towards the west of San Sebastian on the coast.
Natedogg- I don't know much about this town other than the little I've been told. It's starting to see a few tourists these days, since it is so close to Puerto Vallarta. They used to do alot of silver mining in the area, so there are quite a few out of house jewelry shops, with homemade jewelry. It kinda felt a little weird walking through town since everything looked that same as it did hundreds of years ago. There were huge doors in front of places, and a smaller door inside the bigger door. Here's the church with a door in a door- |
