SoCal Successes (zone 20/21)
 

Hello banana growers! Been quiet reader, learning for some time. I may have fallen into the black hole of bananas now that I'm looking to try different varieties.
Have been growing what I believe is Manzano for years, finally taking the steps to learn what can be grown here, just north of Brea.

From what I can gather, some that sound tasty are: DB, Blue Java, Namwah, and such. Once I tasted a good apple banana years ago, I quickly grew away from store Cavendish. Also, from a recent trip to O‘ahu was I able to taste what they call apple bananas (DB?) and Ice Cream. I've seen the Blue Java posted for sale from plant sale events and meetings, but never got to tasting one so I never made the jump to grow it. It was nice and mellow but would prefer to taste a locally grown for a realistic example. The smoothies I had with the apple bananas were delicious!

If anyone can assist with your experiences and are nearby, that would be fantastic. I'm no stranger to growing plants but bananas are technically new to me.
PS., Is anyone going to the upcoming OC-CRFG meeting regarding bananas?

North of Brea you should get plenty of heat to grow bananas. How cold do you get in the winter? Assuming you don't get too you can easily grow bananas. Of the 12 varieties I grow I highly recommend Dwarf Brazilian, Namwa, Mysore, Gros Michel and Gold Finger. Check my listing in the for sale area for info on plant height and if they need propping or not. Good luck!

I'm in a similar situation as OP, located in the SGV. I don't have a lot of a space but definitely want to try Gros Michel. What's another variety that's easy for a beginner and unique tasting you would recommend? I read from another page which highly recommended Dwarf Brazilian.

Yes, for sure Dwarf Brazilian is a winner in all respects. It tastes great, the plant looks great and it doesn't need propping.
