Default So Cal heat wave

We have this every summer of course, but it has been SOOOOO hot! 108 tops, today, in my city. My poor plants. (Not just the bananas, either) :-(
My corn and cucumbers are really happy though...

What do you all do to "comfort" your banana's in the middle of a heat wave?

Side note: the Orinoco's we picked a while back and stored in the garage are ripening very quickly since the heat kicked in. It's so fun to share homegrown banana's with people. They seem to be afraid to try them since "you can't grow banana's here". LOL!!!

At the moment it is dry here in Germany, so about 26°C, nearly no rain, the summer is nearly like the from 2003 in Germany. The summer 2003 in Germany was the hottest in my total life! Even about 100°F!

I water my basjoos and other bananas every evening.

Heat and much water, then the bananas will grow as crazy as, running growth.
momoese is right.

With the best
Joachim

Hello Ya'll,

We are in a drought situation here in coastal Alabama. The heat is bad however nothing near your 108. The humidity is between 88-90%...at 0700. It is kinda brutal. I water everyday in the morning (Orinocos). Have an irrigation system on them. I water my Goldfingers late in the afternoon as well. I have been seeing good growth all summer. Heat, humidity, and H2O.

Hmmm... I know I posted a reply here this morning, but I guess the power surges ate it. :-)

My plants are doing better than expected, but the new leaves have "burn marks" on them.

Thankfully, it was a bit cooler today. Especially since our air conditioner decided to quit last night. I'm more concerned with the banana's being comfortable. Maybe my family/friends are right and I am over the edge. LOL!!! :06:

Yikes! I didn't know it ever got that hot in your area! That's great that the plants like it though.

Oh Yeah... 90's are very common here in the summer.. We get hotter than South Florida.... As well, in the winter we get down to 10f on occasions...
New York is the land of extremes... either we're burning up or Freezing...lol

We baked in NJ today, reading 99 degrees at my house. Supposed to be hotter tomorrow... I'm surprised the plants are doing so well, I got 5-6 inches of growth on one of my new basjoo leaves yesterday... I didn't think they were supposed to do well in very hot temps!

Hiya Re: So Cal heat wave

I live in Tucson, AZ. I was very worried about burning my bananas in the heat of the day suring the summer (we can have weeks of 100s) so I planted them on the east side of the house in order to keep the most intense sun off of the plants. They have been doing pretty well this summer. The new leaves occasionaly get burned. But I try to water them daily at a slow drip/flow for 20min-and hour (depending on whether I forget the water is on).

Hi muffen,

I'd love to hear how your plants do over the summer months. Do you get fruit?

Cooled off a bit today in NJ, only 87 degrees... You guys in the UK must be enjoying the heat there, enough to really get your bananas growing! http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13932257/
Having grown up there (near Portsmouth) myself, I really feel for you though, since we never had any air-conditioning at my house or in our car!

Stay cool!
