Unhappy Snow in Houston??!!

What the???? Ok, I know it's December now but I am seriously not ready for snow. Our local weathermen are forecasting a very good chance of mixed precipitation and snow for the Houston area on Friday. Unfortunately, I have an eye appointment tomorrow afternoon and will not be able to get a jump on wrapping my bananas or bringing in my plumerias and heliconias. I'm stressing out! This is Houston. I've live here for about 6 1/2 years and if it snows later this week it will be the third time it has snowed since I've been here.

Believe you me I know your pain.. Friday am snow and a low sat morning of 28F.. now that's not just frost.... My external nanners are taped and almost bagged.. Well a have the guest suite full of nanners out of the elements..
With this cool weather so early sun must be low on spots or flares or whatever keeps it warmer..? I'm thinkin' I won't have to drive to Marshall (Tx) to the ice rink to go skating..

Brent, we are in the same situation as you. NWS reporting a 70% of snow with accumulation of 1 to 2 inches. If this does, in fact, happen, it will be the first time in recorded history that southwest Louisiana has snow this early. We only see snow once every decade or so, and the last time was last year but usually in the month of January or February. Plus we stand to set a record low Friday night as well if it drops to 31 F. I scurried around yesterday digging up 12 plumeria trees. I had already moved all of my heliconia and other container tropicals into the greenhouse. This afternoon, I'm going to spray my bananas with Freez Pruf and wrap the Ae Ae's. The only thing this weather is good for is duck hunting, which, I will be doing this weekend.

Steve- yeah, they are talking about a possible low of 27 here for Sat. morning and that's in Houston. It could be colder out where I live! I had an eye appointment yesterday evening and didn't get home until 8:30 so I have done absolutely nothing to get ready for this. All of my plumerias are still in the ground, no bananas wrapped (two with fruit also), all potted plants such as heliconias, some bananas, other tender plants all still outside. I'll be one busy dude when I get home this afternoon. How about if you catch a quick flight to Houston and give me a hand? I'll pick you up at the airport!

Boy, I feel bad for you guys in the south. All your plants are thriving outside and BAM temps drop tot he 20s and snow comes. 20s are cold here, so in the south I can only imagine how you must feel. It looks like all the people living DIRECTLY on the east coast will be safe from the snow, but areas inland like atlanta, northern Louisiana, houston, all the way up to DC will be seeing some snow. Fortunately for me there is only a small chance of a mix at night and temps at night should stay around 32 (so hopefully nothing freezes, because we havent had a freeze so far this year) but all my plants will be inside by then anyway.

Hope nothing gets too damaged, and on the bright side at least snow is mildly enjoyable!

Winterized my bananas last night. Its going to be worse than they said because its supposed to be 37 right now and its already down to 33 in SugarLand. It said 3-5in when it wasn't supposed to hit freezing until 12-1 I can only guess what it is now. Especially since there is supposed to be moisture until 8-10pm (up to 80%). Good chance there will be more than I've ever seen here and I was born here. It did get below 20 (5 one year) a few winters but only 1-2in of snow at that time.

Edit - says 36 now so who knows

I think If I saw snow in my yard I'd be ill.. Snow in Arkansas is ok, but not here.. Definately a contrasting landscape. Mr. Jim Cantori on the Weather channel is in Houston.. on site for the show.. not a good sign.. 1-3 inches of white stuff.. You know an inch of rain = a foot of snow.. So be glad it's not a couple feet of snow the way it rains down here.. Good Luck to everyone.. (no smiles) <-thinkin beer-30 needs to hurry up.. lol
