Is this the small one before the flag?
This one was hit pretty hard this winter but has come back very strong and it seems to be throwing an odd looking leaf- could this be the pre flag leaf? It is a 10 month old Dwarf Orinoco. This isn't the first leaf since winter and it sure looks different from any other leaf from this particular plant.
Can anyone confirm since I have only been into the hobby since I bought this plant and not sure if I am thinking correctly........................... The leaf coming from the biggest plant.............. ![]() Here's a closer look...................... ![]() |
Re: Is this the small one before the flag?
I think you may be right. How exciting. It sure looks like it but time will tell. :) Now you will be a total banana stalker looking at it all the time. Have fun!

Re: Is this the small one before the flag?
I was completely ecstatic once I thought it may be a flag leaf. I didn't want to post a false alarm so I waited a couple days until it looked like the real deal.
Actually I really wasn't expecting this to happan so soon especially after the harsh winter and having to cut back almost three feet of p-stem and only being 10 months old (11 months on June 10th). I'll post pics of the progress to come.................... RSH |

Re: Is this the small one before the flag?
The flag leaf is the last leaf to emerge before the flower makes an appearance. :woohoonaner:
MOMOESE has a good drawing to help explain at this thread.......... http://www.bananas.org/f2/flag-leaf-question-2830.html Regards RSH |
Re: Is this the small one before the flag?
Cherokee_Greg, thanks much for asking. RScotth, thanks much for the link. I'm assuming, now, that the "flag" leaf is always much smaller than the others[?].

Re: Is this the small one before the flag?
Typically the flag is about 30% the size of a "regular" leaf on the plant.

Much thanks, Patty, for the additional information. I'll certainly check out your photos in the other thread, as well.

Re: Is this the small one before the flag?
That's what my ice cream banana did too, it put out a leaf that was just slightly smaller than normal, then it put one out about 24" then 12" and the flag leaf was only about 6" long then the bloom. So if that's not the flag, well then you're pretty close anyway!

Pix of FLAG Leaf with FLOWER springing out:
![]() Took these pix from 2nd story of house. Tall Brazilian Manzano Fruit sits on the tree for 6 months to super sweetness!! Can you find the FLAG? ![]() After 5 months...You can see a yellow tint coming through near the middle... ![]() Worth the wait ![]() Each tree puts out between 100-150. |
Re: Is this the small one before the flag?
Patty & Sandy my plant seems to be taking after yours since today it looks like the flag is sending out a flag. I'll be glad to see the flower come out.
Scott- thanks for the pictures. I was fortunate enough to eat a Manzano from a neighbors tree last year and that was the best banana I have ever ate. I can't wait to share mine when they are ready. I already have a neighbor that says she will make tostones! ![]() |
Re: Is this the small one before the flag?
That is quite a bulge there at the base of that leaf! I'm excited for you & can't wait to see more pics!!! We can compare LOL.
