Size of leaves changing
I have all my nanners indoors for the winter and I noticed on some of my smaller plants new leaves coming out are smaller than previous ones. I am used to seeing them get larger not smaller. My cavendish, namwah and rajapuri are doing this. Is it lack of light? They are in fairly light conditions.

Re: Size of leaves changing
It could be something like nitrogen deficiency. Are the petioles developing a rose color on them, and are the leaves lighter colored? It could also be that they are about to bloom, but if that's the case then leave size would decrease very quickly (over only 1 or 2 leaves) before the flower comes out.

Re: Size of leaves changing
Likely a nutrient deficiency of some sort. Too little light usually only affects color and growth speed/length.

Re: Size of leaves changing
From my experience, this is something that just tends to happen indoors. Probably not related to a nutrient deficiency or impending blooming. Possibly related to light levels. Plants indoors just don't tend to grow as vigorously or as sturdy indoors.
For example, many plants I've had growing very well indoors (regular leaves opening up, large, healthy-looking leaves) get destroyed outdoors when exposed to full sunlight and light wind. Leaves get sunburnt badly and wind shreds them and easily breaks them off. However, once they've been outside for a few weeks, new growth is much thicker/sturdier than indoor growth. Just my two copper Lincolns.

Re: Size of leaves changing

Re: Size of leaves changing
I augment for the lack of light and my leaves are coming out the same or bigger. :^)
Russian translation.. This may be linked to the shock, as well as with a change in light level plants and changing thermal regime. My banana, growing in the room without the backlight in winter produce smaller leaves, and in spring each sheet begins to grow more than the previous one. Plants that are growing under lights металлогаллогеновыми bulbs, do not have seasonal changes size leaves. Plants growing in the street, there is a great difference between day and night temperatures, than in the room. Last edited by Abnshrek : 12-05-2012 at 02:17 PM. |
