Hi, my Siam Ruby is hurt. Got this from a friend not long ago. The 1st leave that rolled out is the first photo. First I thought it would recover, but now the second leave isn;t complete either (2nd photo), and it didn't een roll out! Does anybodyknow what causes this. and more, what to do about this?

Something similar happened to me, but it was some rock or dead bug. It blocked the way for the leaf and as it was growing, the bug/rock cut some parts of the leaf.
This can also occur (at least I imagine it so), when there is some inner damage in the P-stem that forms a small barricade through which an emerging leaf can't get. It's a bad luck, but as soon as the P-stem expands after several more leaves, it should be OK. Good luck.

Are you getting a lot of rain by chance? This happened to a few of mine(not as bad) but the problem corrected itself.

there was a thread not long ago on this i think the conclusion was that its a calcium deficiency that would be my best guess try feed it some and maybe hit it with some trace minerals just to be sure thats how i would handle it in my garden

Yeah, my Ensete Maurelii has been doing similar such things recently. The most recent leaf looks okay, though....so I'm hoping it's done with all that.

We have soils full of calcium and it did this anyway. Dunno. Maybe its just the bananas laziness to develop properly.

My Red Iholena has this unfurling problem. I have thought it could be heat with lack of rain, but that does not seem to be the case. I will try to rule out calcium or other deficiency. Thank you for displaying this shared problem.

think it never hurts to make sure that you are giving your plants Micros as well as Macros most abnormalities will clear up on their own if your give proper nutrition its a blanket approach but what can you really expect from a question posed on the net but general info Right Jack?

Thanks all,
I got the plant exactly 3 weeks ago. There hasn't been much rain lately, so I don't think it got too much water on the top (very hot, much sun, I water 'em properly, they like it!!!). Repotted the plant after the first damaged leaf came out. I'll search for some trace elements, never used that before. And indeed Damaclese, that will not hurt
We'll see what happens with the third leave. Hope there's nothing strange inside that's eating the plant

Has anyone figured what causes the unfurling problem. Every leaf on my white Iholena has this problem. Few leaves unfurl completely. I often find the top foot of the leaf laying on the ground. In the pic you can see the flag leaf is not unfurling .

i think the consensus was heat/low humidity and possibly a lack of minerals

NOOOOO! Do not EVER wet leaves of plants during the hot part of the day!!! The beads of water act as a magnifying glass in the sun and bake the leaves....never a good idea. Mist at night, water in the early morning or late evening...but do NOT water during the middle of the day....especially the leaves. If you want more humidity around your plant, you could set out pails of water around it to create a micro-climate or something...just don't water the leaves in the sun.

Sorry to disagree with you but there have been enumerable studies done that show this highly publicized magnifying affect is nonsense wile it may have some what of a magnifying affect they are freely evaporating which cools the leaf off
living in the third hottest place in north America i can tell you that some plants thrive on having there leafs wet during the day for example studies have shown that Palms benefit from the wetting of there leafs there are many examples of this affect but for the sake of brevity i wont site more unless other wise requested

misting at night permits fungal and bacterial growth the leafs stay wet for extended periods of time i cant recommend this and defiantly if your humidity is
high its bad Musa And Ensete are particularly pron to fungal attacks in wet conditions at night

and i want to say one last thing if what you say is true my plants would be toast they get misted 3 times a day when the temps are over 100
