Anyone ship banana plants North in the winter?

I'm sure people do in the southern states but with my past experience I would wait till March or April

Bananas are tropical plants I don't believe freezing weather is good for them

What about using heat packs to control the temp? I know many people that ship live reptiles that way year round.

Or ship next or same day air that seems safe an I know Delta doesn't charge too much.

Something in the Cargo hold is going to freeze there too.. Best to let the weather take of itself.. Like Matt said April isn't that far off.. :^)

Yes Over night with heat packs in Styrofoam box is a safe bet for reptiles. But those guys are use to packing stuff to live . Nursery peeps just are not set up to ship in freezing weather. Best to wait untill the big freeze is over. We all seen plenty of pictures of frozen banana plants .. I gotta stop talking about this cold weather its making me cold....

It's not that I'm too impatient although I would like to order some plants soon, but more interested in why most companies don't winter ship. It has to be possible I'm kinda interested in seeing if I can master shipping in freezing temps an make buying,selling,trading available to everybody year round.

I wouldn't bet on it.. People that don't ship now are smart especially if they guarantee their product.. :^)

Hirts from Ohio does.. I just order two mekong giants & one tr hovey papaya & some kens red kiwi in weather that was -14. No problem looked good. They packed them in Styrofoam peanuts & heat packets.

It is a matter of economics. If nurseries ship in the winter when they know it is cold, the plants will most likely die. When consumers receive dead plants in the mail, they tend to want a refund. The company has now lost the plant, the money, the shipping fee, and the customer. If the company does this several hundred times, they will go out of business.

I have ordered bananas from Florida Hills, Greenearth Co, Wellspring Gardens, and Hirts previous winters. These companies shipped their bananas to me and they arrived just fine. However, I have never experienced a winter like this one with temperatures running 30 degrees below normal. I agree with the others, it would be better to wait until April.

i have bought from them also last febuary. plants were fine. but, it was well above freezing.i agree with everyone else. wouldnt even want to try now. thanks
