The most famous variegated bananas are seedless cultivares.

Variegated banana cultivars having seeds in their fruit has nothing to do with how famous or popular they are it's about if their female flowers were pollinated or not.

Probably the most famous variegated banana cultivar in the world is the Manini aka a'ea'e and every one that we harvest on our farm has seeds and that's because we have plenty of bees and all of the plants are probably within a 1/4 mile of a fertile pollen source.

Banana Cultivars don't self pollinate and if there isn't a suitable pollen source nearby they'll produce seedless fruit and that's why they are chosen to be CULTI-vated VAR-ieties, CULTIVAR.

Here's a Manini a'ea'e I harvested today and I sliced one of the fruit so members could see the seed appear as the slices were removed.

Thanks PR. Just curious, how many seeds are typically in a Manini banana?

When pollinating a banana cultivar there are many factors that affect the amount of seeds that are produced and because compatibility is a factor different males will have an affect on many things. I've only been breeding bananas for a few years and even though I've created a few thousand new varieties most of those were with using the Blue Java as the female parent. My focus has mainly been with Plantains and very little effort with the Manini. One interesting thing I've noticed with the Manini, and to be clear this only covers my personal experiences, all the seeds have been located at the distal end.

Smile Re: Seed banana variegata

This question is primarily for P-R Giants... I am fascinated with the prospect of being able to breed and cultivate new varieties of ornamental bananas for myself! I have started collecting variegated varieties to begin my experiment! I look forward to any advice than anyone could afford, and I am currently looking to acquire VARIEGATED FLORIDA, and SIAM RUBY. I would be a "serious potential buyer!" Many thanks😆
