Default Seasonal Influence on bunch size

Probably more of Zone 8-9 issue but has anyone noticed a seasonal influence on bunch size? I'm referring to flowers in March to May period (Spring) vs. June through August period (Summer.)

I'm getting a couple early flowers on my tall namwas this year and the flower is smaller than normal. II usually get my flowers in July/August when the plant is robust. The plant itself is within normal height i.e. about 12' pstem, reduced number of leaves after winter (8 vs. late summer 15 plus), and the circumference of the pstem is narrower than usual due to me peeling off a couple brown winter freeze damaged layers to get to the green. Otherwise green and healthy at the moment of flowering.

I water and fertilize regularly during the entire life cycle of the plant so no disruptions or changes in this area. Sun as usual. The main thing seems to be early vs. late flower unless the corm is in some sort of age related decline since they are about five-six years old. Ty's recent comment on another thread has me considering corm age decline as the culprit.

I do get smaller early spring blooms but normally by May/June they are normal. I always assumed it was due to winter stress on the plant.

Try removing a pup or 2 and once they are growing pick a similar sized pup on the old mat to compare. It will take a little time for the dug pup to get established but once it does I bet it will outperform the one on the old mat.

I think it’s some sort of location/soil issue. Once you dig up and move the old mat they seem to do great!

Spring flowering is often on a plant that has been"weakened" by Winter weather, and thus less energetic, than a plant that flowers in late Summer or early Fall occurs on a plant that is at its peak of health and vigor. "Your results may vary".
