Default Replanting corm in spring...zone 5

Hello all,

I planted 3 banana trees last year in June which all three did well. In the fall, I dug up all three and stored them in a storage place that does not drop below 40 degrees. I cut the stem down to about 8 inches on 2 trees. On the third one, I cut all the leaves except the curled center leaf and stored it that way. My question is this, is there a method to preparing the corms for spring? Do I start the indoors now? Whats the recommend method? I'm in zone 5 (Chicago).

I'm sure this topic has been covered before. If you can suggest threads or posts, I would appreciate it.

Thank you!

If you want to start waking them up you can pot them up. Water sparingly, put in an warm area with good lighting. Give them time, a watched plant never grows.

Check out the cold hardy section of the forum and pick and choose which thread best fits your needs....there is a bunch of them.
Also if you you do a YouTube search you will find some informative DIY videos on both potting up and winter storing your banana plants.
You will find some good takeaways.

Iowa,

You're spot on! I don't do it (watch my plants) anymore now that I have some experience under my belt. Lol. But, I've done my share.

As for the corms, I've cleaned them up, cut off access roots and repotted them in a well draining soil mix. I have them in my basement up close to south facing windows with two grow bulbs for additional light after 4pm for another 6 hours. I've overwinterized canna and elephant ear bulbs before, but was wondering if it's the same process for a banana corm. Thanks for the reply and suggestion.

Cincinnana,

Thanks for the direction on this forum. I will definitely check out the cold hardy section. Didn't find much on youtube specially on waking up the corms. I'm probably not doing the right searches.

Again thanks for the advice

Yes, petty much just plant them, cut a few inches off the top and watch for growth. If it seems to not be doing anything cut a few more inches off of the top and repeat until it's putting out leaves. If you have room you can pot them up to get them started. Last year I started misting the roots a couple weeks before I was going to bring them out. It seemed to help wake them up.
