Red Kru's First Flower

Amazed it popped at all. The Kru took the worst hit from cold of all the others. Hope there is enough green left to support the fruit. Got 3 good swords a puppin.

Bananimal,
I think your banana bunch will mature. I had an orinoco bloom for the first time last year with only 4 leaves. The fruit matured nicely.
Congratulations!

dablo93,

The Kru went in the ground in Feb of last year starting as a 18 inch tall bare rooted tissue culture pup. Three pounds of 6-2-12 each month starting in March brought it to where it is today. Also 40 lbs of cow manure alternating with mushroom compost spread to a 3 foot diameter every 4 months. Also S Fla weather helped a little.

South Fla. weather helped a lot! I'm appropriately jealous!

You are in for a real treat, the Red Kru bloom is spectacular!
The inside of the bracts are a light cream color.
This was one of mine:

There's some other photos of Red Kru in our wiki:

Dan, That's a nice looking Kru! I tried growing them in Tampa a few times and they always died on me. I figured they were finicky and stopped trying. What you accomplished is amazing with the fertilizer, cow manure and mushroom compost. Great job getting it to fruit! I've heard it's one of the best tasting bananas.

So they must have turned red already and are probably about ready to harvest, yea?
These are very fast from bloom to harvest in my experience.
Here was one of my bunches:

Isn't it neat when the skins split like that. My 120 or so Goldfingers split their skins when ripening but didn't affect the health of the fruit. I ate 8 to 14 bananas a day to try and keep up with the ripening. My wife and father did their best, as well as the bananimal, Chloe the dog - she loves bananas. Taste was so good I now rate the G-finger, tentatively, as the best -- until the others come in for the first time - can't wait.

Great pics, bananimal! I've always wanted to try growing Kru. Maybe someday, if I can find some space in my garden!

Yes! It was neat! It was awesome actually!
And I agree, Goldfinger is wonderful!
You've got to post some pics or a video of Chloe the bananimal masticating bananas.
