Red Daccas
 

A friend of mine from Australia sent me just a kids page that listed some varieties that are available to him there in Australia. There was Cavendish, Ladyfinger, Goldfinger and then there was one called Red Daccas. Like I said it was just a kids page and didn't have any real information on it. I am wondering if this is a banana that we have here only under a different name or if this is just one we don't have?

Ok, I thought you all knew everything, lol. Now this is the site but I don't think it will help since it is a kids site. Not sure why there aren't any adult sites but I couldn't find any.

Afetr doing a google search it would seem that all red bananas in Australia are called red daccas. That makes me wonder, are the red edible varieties really that different from one another?

Try finding out if your friend in Australia has access to a nursery in order to get M. jackeyi seeds.This plant is native from Queensland and apparently you can buy it locally there.If you can get seeds please let me know.They are extremely rare in the U.S.

I have asked about the jackeyi to several Australian friends, so far none of them have said they found them.

I have never heard of any of those others either,lol.

I've always been under the impression australians are not allowed to grow bananas in the garden as the fear of diseases wiping out the plantations led to them only being commercially grown (legally at least). I know some of friends there can't import Musa, and Heliconia (known to have some of the same disease problems) are only allowed in as seed. Perhaps the banana restrictions are regional?? don't know for sure.

I passed that on to my friend in Australia and her is what she told me thought you all might be interested.


My understanding is that there are regional restrictions where there are commerical growing plantations. Nobody would be concerned if we grew bananas. Infact they would probably be fascinated bec we are so cold. Some are growing them in Melbourne but they really need special care and conditions. I have seen bananas being grown in residential backyards while travelling through Queensland. There is even one growing in the Townsville Hospital garden area. I would say the one growing there is a Lady Finger. There are also restrictions on grape vines being grown in certain areas.

Ive been doing research and found that we can infact grow the bananas here amongst the plantations, but, we have to apply to the DPI - Dept Primary Industry, let them know what and how many we want and they will instruct if we are able to or not and where to buy our plants from.
