Red Bananas - What Plant?
I bought some red bananas at Rouses. They are small and taste incredible. The sticker says Turbana, grown in Columbia, and the number is 4236. And at the bottom it simply says Red Banana.
So...anyone have an idea of what kind of red banana plant it is from? |

'Nino' maby?
:lurk: . |
Re: Red Bananas - What Plant?
They are not 'Nino', they are 'Dwarf Red'. The two common cultivars you can get in the US with red fruit are 'Red'/'Tall Red' (the taller one) or 'Dwarf Red' (aka 'Cuban Red', 'Jamaican Red' and more).

Re: Red Bananas - What Plant?
Tommy,
I bought a tall red at Home Depot, spring 2009. It was the biggest and most beautiful plant in my garden last summer, then last winter almost killed it. It came back this spring, but just barely. By this time last year it was HUGE (pics are in my gallery), but hasn't even hit 8 ft this year, and no pups like last year either. I was told that they are sensitive to cold, and now I have a better understanding of what that means! Tall Red has really disappointed me. It will be interesting to see what kind od winter we have - and what comes back next year. Russell |

Yes, all the reds seem to be very cold-sensitive.
