Is this really a Patupi?
I recently purchased a patupi (kokopo) from Sow Exotic. I am now questioning whether or not the plant I received is actually a patupi.
All the images I have seen on-line of little patupis show the plants to be all green. Sundra also recently purchased a patupi from Sow Exotic and it looks all green to me. Here is a link to Sundra's post which includes a photo of the plant Sundra received from Sow Exotic: Kokopo/Patupi from Sow Exotic What I received has a red pseudostem, red leaf margins, and red center veins on the leaves (see photos below). Before I contact Sow Exotic and complain, I want to see if everyone agrees with me.

Re: Is this really a Patupi?
Does not look like my Patupi which is all green. Your plant reminds me of a variety in the Mysore subgroup because of all the maroon coloring.

Re: Is this really a Patupi?
I got mine from Ty and it sometimes has red in the pstem from time to time (comes and goes) and has light colored winestain/spotting like yours when young. My pstem has never shown as much red as yours but that could be due to ph, too much/too little of some nutrient, amount of sun, etc. Mine does show some red pinstriping along the edge of the leaf but its not as prevalent as yours.
I've been documenting my quest for patupi fruit on this thread with lots of photos: Patupi!!! |

Re: Is this really a Patupi?
Art, my mother plant got killed to the ground this winter. We dug up a couple of pups and potted them up last fall, and they struggled along all winter in pots. I was looking at them today and they have blotches on the leaves similar to dwarf cavendish. I don't know how to post pictures, but I will try to take a picture and figure it out tomorrow.

Re: Is this really a Patupi?
I guess now that I look at it closely they do look alike. The blotches on mine are definitely more noticeable than yours, but last year I don't remember it having them. https://photos.app.goo.gl/13YmxBHvdqUAS2Xx6

Re: Art_R "Is this really a Patupi?"
I think you've got a Patupi too. It looks like the one I got from Everglades Farm: Kokopo from Everglades Farm (Kokopo/Patupi=Same) Mine even has the small little brown speckles on one of its leaves. The almost lime green leaf colors. And one of the (leaf) stems is pink, while the other is green. The one I got from Sow Exotic was very very small, so probably too young to show these features. The Sow Exotic one also died. X_x Too small to ship this time of year, I think. Last edited by Sundra : 04-23-2021 at 10:59 AM. |

Re: Is this really a Patupi?
May as well throw some pics of mine in here too...
It's p-stem was a little bit darker and more colorful when it was smaller but it has gotten greener lately, though the pink/red petiole margins are more pronounced now. https://photos.app.goo.gl/9Gj1Lz1TKQWQswEU9 |

Re: Is this really a Patupi?
Thanks to everyone who replied to this post. Here is an update. This spring I purchased a Patupi from Sow Exotic and made a post questioning whether or not it was a real Patupi. I can now say with reasonably good confidence that it actually is a genuine Patupi. It went from TC to flowering in about 6 months. It went from flower to ripe fruit in about two months. The pseudostem is relatively slender, just like the description. And I harvested the fruit earlier this week and the fruit has a definite orangish tint. So it looks like I got the real deal!!!

Re: Is this really a Patupi?
Your original picture was seem to be showing nitrogen deficiency. But, apparently, you fed it well enough. lol
