I live in 10B and grow Saba.... It grows fast and really tall, especially during our rainy season. Mine continually push out pups so you have to keep up with removing pups or the mat will spread in no time. I decided to relocate mine after they took over my side yard and it was an all day job digging them up. My experience is that the fruit take longer than usual to ripen (7-9 months) I haven't used them green / cooking but they were OK once yellow. They are monsters so find the right spot for them.

So I've eaten them from food vendor on a stick (cooked in brown sugar and butter) and as tostones (very good) so I know they are very good for cooking. But I've not doen this with ones I've personally grown.

In my experience, it grows very fast, trunk is very thick, and it gets very tall. I grow and produce a fair amount of banana varieties and grow them for the fruit, bit I grew this one for its size. My first bunch was tossed... it lost most of its leaves (tropical storm winds) and without leaves, the fruit just died off. I've found the leaves are more brittle than others and heavy winds break the stems much easier than any of my other bananas.

Anyways, the ripened fruit is good. For such a tall plant, you'd think the fruit would be larger. They are about 3-4 inches long but stocky / thick. Tastes is not too sweet, a little soft when yellow ripe. I'm know they are much better suited for cooking like a plantain (which I plan to do with my current bunch). I'm spoiled as I grow some very tasty varieties so when I say fruit is OK when ripened, I should put that in perspective.

Summer in Florida is very rainy / humid so they do like to grow. If I remember correctly, I believe your area in NW Spain actually gets decent amount of rain and lots of sun so Saba should do well in your area. I know you've got some great wine grown there!

Good luck and share how it goes!!

Search for posts by member "Rmplmnz". He had some nice videos of his collection that included his giant sabas.

The plant is incredibly tall and thick which is appealing if you are into giant plants but it seemed to me that the bunch sizes were small for such a monster plant and it would be a lot of work to chop it up at the end of the life cycle.
