Question regarding M. velutina

Hi All,

Is any one growing Musa velutina in the tropics or warm sub tropics. Like say Hawaii or Sth Florida. Or is it more suited to warm temperate or temperate areas like central to Sth California. Ensete ventricosum for instance wont grow in warm sub tropical areas like Sth Queensland. I grew a few from seed which came from Sth east Australia. It grew great over winter in the ground but as soon as the heat and humidity of spring to summer came they died. So is Velutina like this or will it do well in the tropics.

I saw it growing very well in Costa Rica. I don't really think it matters. Bananas will grow whenever the conditions are right.

I think they need water galore. I grew in Sydney that died in the heat of summer, but it was very dry. I have some now which are growing wild - the only difference is that they get alot more water

I'm growing it in Hawaii and it's doing very well.

I used to grow Musa velutina 30 years back in Sydney (warm temperate). Then in Brisbane(sub tropical) and it did ok.
Now I have tried it again, a seedling and a sucker and both died on me after initially growing. Good to hear it grows well in Hawaii which makes me think cultivation technique is more to the point than climate concerns.
In my opening statements I said Ensete ventricosum wont grow in warm sub tropical Sth Queensland. Well I have tried again 20 years later and my plant is growing great guns. Ivé placed it on the south side of our house protected from hot summer sun but open to bright full sky and it is powering. So growing techniques can be the answer to problem plants.
I want to try Musa velutina again and try to water it a bit more.

Experimentation is important. Take what people say can or can't be grown with a grain of salt
