Default A Question for the Californians

I live in a tiny town called Woodlake Ca, known for our oranges (Near Visalia, CA OR an Hour South of Fresno aka out in the boonies ^_-) I would like to try and grow edible bananas. How do they do in zone 9? It frosts but can I leave them outside with some protection? Or must they be wintered in a green house or (in my case, in my house in a bright room haha) What varieties would you recommend for a newbie greenhorn?
