I purchased two 10' tall Musa Thai Black last year in May. By the end of summer they had grown to over 15' and were a thing of beauty. Both plants put out about 4-5 pups apiece which grew to several feet. I never got around to removing the pups last year before I removed them from the ground for winter storage.

I plan on planting them this weekend with warm temps for the foreseeable future and was wondering when would be a good time to separate the pups? I don't want to send the plant into shock upon first planting by removing the large pups. But I am also itching to spread these beautiful plants around my pool area here in the mid-west.

Separate before you plant.

Thanks. I guess I just needed some reassurance that separating them from their parent wouldn't lead to unnecessary killing of the plant before they are in the ground and off and growing for the season.

As long as you're careful while removing the pups and don't cut too much off of the mother corm the mother plant should be fine.

Well, your question has been answered but I just had to comment on your post.

Are those things beautiful or what? I have one tall one - 5-6 feet that I had in the ground all of last summer but it didn't pup. Of all the bananas that I grow the Thai Black is my most favorite so that when summer was over and I had only one plant I dug it and moved it inside - just in case we had a severe winter. Now that winter is over and it's time to put it back in the ground I still have no pups. Maybe this summer. I sort of envy you and your pups.

Thanks!!! It was my first time growing Thai Black.I got many compliments on how awesome they looked. I even had a neighbor stop by other day asking about them.

I managed to separate 3 pups and plant them by themselves. 3 others appeared to be extremely mushy on the inside and I am afraid didn't survive indoors over winter. My fear now is that it has been over a week with warm weather and a good amount of rain yet I have seen no growth from the moms or the pups. My Musa Basjoo, which I left outside, is already growing. I suppose maybe I am just anxious and expecting them to start growing after about a week in the ground is a bit premature?? Just anxious I guess.
