Default Question about height

I couldn't find a sticky that answered this.

When we are referencing banana height, what are we referring to?

Is it the total height of the plant, or are we talking about the top of the pseudo stem. By top, I mean the height at which the inflorescence emerges.

Thx for the question.....I am confused also...

For me .. I go by height of last leaf... measured from the typical apex of the leaf.

Some are smaller while others are longer.....typical

But .....sometimes you get a ginger...

Yes I was always taught to measure stem height, no leaves included. So where you would see to the top of the bud come out.

I always measure from the ground to the top of the stem. No leaves. I always add at least a foot just to pump up my egotistical. Nobody ever believes me anyway.

Supposedly height is to top of pseudostem, or the highest point of the arch in the banana flower stalk and do NOT include leaves.

Heights listed as (910) at webebananas.com are actual heights measured in that fashion in my yard. Others listed there are from other sources and may or may not have been done in that manner. Some clearly must include leaves in their height.

Knowing the pseudostem height is very important for determining how close you plant is to flowering.

I'm gonna go with arch of banana flower stalk. That splits the difference, and makes sense. Winner winner, chicken dinner.

Guilty as charged. I was measuring the wrong way.

So, don't try to grow a 10 foot high banana plant in a 10 foot high greenhouse.
