could it be Basju?????
pronounce as Basyou as it is actually chinese(not from japan) in my believe. Musa basjoo is commonly referred to as the Japanese Fibre Banana and it's native place is given as the Ryukyu (Liu Kiu) Islands. However, Musa basjoo is not the Japanese Fibre Banana. Musa basjoo is not from the Liu Kiu Islands and not from Japan, it is a Chinese species. The Japanese Fibre Banana is Musa balbisiana another introduced species, probably from the Philippines. There are no Musa native to Japan. Gabe? ron Last edited by the flying dutchman : 05-09-2007 at 01:13 PM. |

This was covered on the Gardenweb banana forum, er - the Musa basjoo forum, ad nauseum, in more than one thread I think. "Bass", like the fish - "joo", like "Jew."

Musa Basjoo and the Okinawan fiber basjoo are certainly of Chinese origin
which were transplanted in Japan many many years ago, and at that time the people in this country read the Chinese charactors of this plant as "Bashou" which you better can pronounce as "Bashow". As Basjoo is popular here in Japan and the people believe banana could only be survived in warmer places only few peple know that Basjoo is also a kind of banana, they believe Basjoo is a very banana-like plant but not a banana- musa. |
