I'd like to participate, but I do have a few questions:

1. If I pay $20 or $40, what do I get ? 1 plant 2, a TC tray with 100 plants.?
2. I live in Belgium, will they be shipped here, who will ship them ?
3. We've all contributed our $$ and received our plants. What happens next with the TC cultures? Trow away? Who will sell them further?

Don't get me wrong. I want to contribute and I want to participate, but at the moment I see a lot of enthusiast people waving with their $$, but I don't see a lot of direction.

I'd up mine to $40 if we can get some concrete answers about what is going to happen to the one plant.

and Jeffrey, I'd love to have a Red Thai.

I think Jeffrey has given us a better proposal. For one thing, it might be faster than buying a plant, waiting for it to pup, and then starting the tc process. For another, it takes away the risk to the 'investors', and Keith, if the tc's gets contaminated.
A few questions however:
...Jeffrey, do you know how much you will be able to sell the tc'd plants for?
...Am I correct that Ace of Hearts is just another name for Red Thai?
...Do you know how many plants you will be able to get?

Good Afternoon,

My name is Ty Strode & I am the Director of Marketing for Agri-Starts, Inc. I have read though all the postings & have seen all that you are going through to get Musa 'Siam Ruby' (Asiatica is calling it 'Ace of Hearts' which is not taxonomicly correct, & I believe they will be changing it).

I have contacted Brian Williams of Brains Bontanicals, he will be the first one to recieve our production of 'Siam Ruby' in Feb. or March of 2007.

His website is: http://www.briansbotanicals.net/

I suggested to Brian to offer 'Siam Ruby' to you all first, after seeing the extent the community is going to get their hands on one. He has agreed, and wants to put together a list of names of the people who would like one.

He would be willing to offer it to the members of Bananas.org for $45.00. If someone could put together a list of names of all interested, Brain will make sure you get one first.

That's awesome, Ty! Count me in also, please. How long before the price drops on it from $45? I know it's a rare banana, and the contributor of the banana wants to capitalize on the market (and why not). That being said...if it can be tc'ed, the price should drop drastically relatively soon thereafter...am I right?

Considering that this is a species banana, and not a cultivar, Musa 'Siam Ruby' wouldn't be correct either. I noticed that Tony Avent of Plant Delights had named it that. Is that where the name came from? Doesn't he have it in tc also? I'll be interested to see what the taxonomists do with this one. If it truly is a species banana, and produces viable seed, it should have a botanically correct name. The sooner the better also! I've seen it called 'Siam Ruby', 'Ace of Hearts', 'Palawan Variegated', amongst other names. Too many names=too much confusion. Although with this one, a picture would avoid all confusion for sure! Sure is a beauty.

While I'm on the subject of species vs. cultivar...if it is a species, it shouldn't be able to be patented. Has someone tried to do this yet? I've noticed that the Wollemi Pine has been patented, but I don't think that holds water in a court of law. I can understand how GMOs and special hybrids get patented. It takes a lot of work, research, etc., to develop them. I just don't understand how a plant with species status gets patented! Thanks.

HOLD UP.

Are the common people really going to have ONE business, that will only provide a safer TC, make all of your hard work go down the drain!???!??!?!

HONESTLY GUYS! Take a risk.....If you must....wait until the Ace of Hearts pups to insure a good TC, but don't let one business take over us....

Not to be a pain, but Jarred, why can a business post on here!? This is a site for Banana Growers alike that love to grow bananas......... NOT A BUSINESS..... You know deep down they are just here for the financial value. As you can see already......that is the only reason.

Agri-starts.........GO DESTROY YOUR OWN FORUM.

BESIDES- Agri-Starts........... WRONG THREAD.

I don't have a problem with a company helping out with a rare plant or annoucing it. I've been looking at Agri-starts site for the last three years and wishing there plants were available in Europe . At UKOasis many of the best Exotic plant nurseries post , not to advertise most of the time I must add , but once in a while they will say if they have got there hands on a special plant. It's a fine line between a free for all and interesting and helpful info , I guess as long as the line is not crossed then it will be good for the folks here.
I'll be putting my name down for a 'Siam' and perhaps a few more from the next run if possible. I'm looking forward to our move to the US and to meeting in person some of you guys , I did look to see how far Brians Bontanicals is from Maryland , it's a ways but I'll be making the trip as soon as I can , the website looks great and any person with the passion for plants Brian has must be met in person.
Taylor deserves a big Thanks for starting this thread and even tho the result is different the goal is about to be achieved , Well done Taylor .
Later
Steve

...Please Note...

Agri-Starts is not offering to sell us plants directly, but pointing us toward the people who have the rights to sell the tc's they are producing. Brian's Botanicals is not Agri-Starts, andTy doesn't need to be slammed for doing us a courtesy.
If A-S is doing anything really commercial here it is trying to find a price point for Thai Reds. Personally, I'm waiting for Jeffrey to get back into the string. We may be getting tc's from the same source he planned to use, or he may have new information.

Brian Williams here from Brians Botanicals. I should first say I am glad to be apart of this web-site and wish I had found it a long time ago as I am a true plant nut like many of you.

I have not read all the post yet so I am not up to date. I will be reading them soon to catch up.

I think I should first try to help out my good friend TY. He contacted me about this site saying you were all interested in getting starts of this banana and he suggested that I release some to you guys first due to your dieing need for them. I understand that you had a plan to get the plant and if you would rather follow through with this plan I understand. What I was going to offer is a small amont of the plants to just this group of people for the lowest cost. This would be 1 plant per person and I would only take the names for a few weeks then the list would be finished and no one added. I would consider this being very generous because the first plan was to release them on E-bay slowly and let people bid for them one at a time till their set price was made. Which I would believe much higher than this price.
If this will cause a huge argument or problem I can pull the offer off the table. It was not ment to cause fighting among such good people just a different solution for your banana delima.
This maybe the oddest introduction I have had and I am sure some will be glad I offered this to the site others may be upset. I am sorry if this steps on peoples toes it was not intended for that. I will let you guys decided on what you want to do.
I look forward to being a regular member and would like to share hybrid info and hardiness info with the group. I am sure this topic will be dominate for sometime but I do have much to offer the forum and many new banana varieties will soon be coming out from me. THANKS

I can ship just about anywhere. All overseas orders require at the minimum a phytosanitary certificate which costs me $50 and I pass that on to the customer.
