Planting by a pool
My brother has a place by his pool for a banana plant. Has anyone had luck planting them by a pool. He wants one of my California Golds. Thanks:08:

I was told that banana plants grow great around pools, Greg! :goteam:

Re: planting by a pool
I think they should be fine there. Im placing my bananas by my pool this summer too. I hope they like pool water as much as my palms, camellia, and all the bushes around my pool do!

Re: Planting by a pool
Im not sure about that. What about clorides from pool water? Or too much humidity and extra water during stagnation periods?

Re: Planting by a pool
I've only ever heard good things about growing banana plants around pools. It's not like they're right in the pool, so the chlorine wouldn't affect them. ;)
I'm going to be growing some around a pool this summer too, at my mom's new place and I can't wait! :goteam: My zone is super muggy in summer anyway, so I like to grow banana cultivars that fair well in high humidity environments. :D Good luck Greg & Alex, and please be sure to show shots... : ) |
Re: Planting by a pool
Hi Greg,
I am glad to see you are back posting again. I have a large mat of Orinoco planted behind the waterfall on our pool as well as a few High Color Minis in the landscaping that surrounds it. My banana plants thrive there and help give a tropical feel. There are a few definite benefits to planting near a pool in Texas. The evaporation of pool water on hot days will cool the area and raise humidity slightly. In the winter the water is usually warmer than our night time low so it helps protect against brief cold snaps as long as it is not windy. Dave |
Re: Planting by a pool
I'm pretty sure I have seen pictures from several members that have gorgeous bananas planted around pools. Cheryl (cvalentine), Frank (bigdog) maybe, seems like I even remember Jarred (mediahound) with some pictures by a pool. Chong showed me a picture I think of a friend's California Gold by a pool too. Now don't stone me if I am wrong guys, I have a swiss cheese memory! Anyway, they all looked beautiful to me.
They probably wouldn't like being splashed on by the chemically treated water though. So, I don't think I would plant them that close. :) ~JaNan |

Re: Planting by a pool
Yes, thats what I ment. Depends on whats poll purpose, if its decorative only than I belive it would work good, but if U use it for Summer joys than its way too much splashing and things like that. Bath pools services uses too much chemicals for water dezinfection and plants just dont love that.
Whan U look at Hotels pools only ones with Sea water have live plants arround, all others mostly use plastic substitutes. :woohoonaner: |
Re: Planting by a pool
I've seen pictures too JaNan...and they're gorgeous! :08:
I think as long as you don't have a bunch of splashing kids around and if the plants are far enough away, it shouldn't be an issue. ;) I'm just going to put mine in the corner, as far from the pool as I can. Good luck, poolside banana growers! :goteam: : ) |

My neighbors uphill from me have a pool. One time they drained it or something into my yard and all my plants got burnt. Maybe they had to much chemicals in it that time? |

I think it's a good idea. I am planing to put lots of plants around my pool. That will add a tropical looks to the pool. I will be planting most of them in containers. Container gardening gives more control over the plants, you can move it around.

Hey Greg!
Bad idea. Pools are deadly. I don't have a pool, or a California Gold, so send it to me! :08: Russell |
Re: Planting by a pool
I have a ton of palm trees and plants around my pool. Pots and in the ground. Including 4 different types of bananas. They love it there! I also think that the pool gets warmed up during the day and keeps it slightly warmer around the pool area and ground temps at night in the winter. I live in 8/9. But with the pool it creates a microclimate of a solid 9 especially if it was sunny all day.

Re: Planting by a pool
i have lots of bananas around my pool and they do great. there all in pots. The pool water doesnt bother them in fact they are usually just watered by splashing kids. i think the humidity and reflection off the water all help them to thrive. In fact some of them look better than those that are planted elsewhere in the yard.
