Plant shopping trip to San Deigo

I left my house at 4:45 AM and headed down to San Deigo for the annual Palm Society and Bamboo Societys sale at Quail Botanical Gradens. We made it in less than three hours. I picked up several plants.

I picked up a Cycas Thouarsii, Philodendron Jose Buono and two Variegated Clivia Darumas.

Then we went to Home depot. Yes Home Depot and I picked up this 17 foot Foxtail Palm.

Can you believe this palm was only $69.00! I love Home Depot! We then went to two more nurseries and saw a huge Variegated Clivia. I had to have it.

I then saw countless AeAe bananas with lots of pups.

On our way out I saw a huge mat of Musa Paradisiaca. They were 15 plus feet tall. I asked if they had any for sale and they said they were taking the mat down

. They then said I can have a few if I want to dig them out

. We doug out six! Three of them are in the first picture. Tweleve hours later I made it back home just in time to plant.

I can't figure it out, how did you haul all of this stuff???? Did you borrow your friend's pickup again? I've never seen Ae Ae down there except JD Anderson, pretty cool. I need to go on a plant shopping trip with you one of these days, Andrew!

All great stuff Andrew. Any idea what color the Clivea flowers will be? (I'm hoping yellow). You must have looked pretty funny coming home with that palm!!!

I went with a friend this trip. The Corvettes don't hold many plants. Anytime you want to go on a plant hunt with me just let me know! They had potted pupping AeAes!

Besdies my plants my friend had one Fish Tail Palm, one Variegated Clivia, three other rare palms, one cycad and three bananas we dug up. The truck was packed! The palms stuck out of the truck. Next time a UHual is needed

sounded like you had fun this weekend great pics , after seeing your 17 ft foxtail palm i went to lows for some petunia's for my garden and saw a 6.5 foxtail palm im thinkin about buying in in a week or two ( if its still there) oh i hope it will be

I hope they still have some. Foxtails are a little harder to grow for me in Santa Barbara. Make sure it will survive your area. Have fun with your petunia's.

Foxtails are difficult in Santa Barbara? I always thought that SB and Ventura area have some of the nicest looking palm specimens, especially for queen palms and king palms (aside from those awful looking Archontophoenix on the 101 center divider

).

My Fox tails do o.k. I have lost two. It gets in the 40's at night in the winter (way to cold). They are more finicky than other palms. Queen palms do great but are very common. I like to grow many types. I have Neodypsis decaryi (Triangle palm), Rhapis Excelsa, Licuala Ramsayi, Coccothrinax, Kentia, Dypsis Lanceolata, Fish Tail, Bismarckia nobilis, Hyophorbe verschaffeltii (Spindle palm), King palms, Hawaiian fan palm and Majestic palm. I find it hard to have only one type of a plant.

Many do well its just that the foxtail would rather be further down in southern California (less cold). All the other varieties I listed above have done well at my house.

Andrew, if I ever come out to your end of the states.......I'm callin you to take me for a "ride", the only thing is that san diego is more like a 30 hour drive for me.....
