Which to plant

This spot has proven to be the best in my yard. Also gets some super rays off my windows during the winter which I believe helped them a lot. I have 14 feet between Lou and Leaf Erikson and want to pick one worthy of this prime real estate. My options are:

Praying Hands
Black Thai
Patupi
Sumatrana X
Viente Cohol

Ideas are much appreciated. Thanks

Viente Cohol (high probability of fruit) and Patupi (low probability of fruit) require a lot of heat. The hottest, sunniest spot is the best. Catching sun early in the morning during the winter with protection from the N or W is ideal. Viente Cohol is a midget or at least the ones I have seen so if he needs to clear a 6' fence to get sun need to take that into consideration. Patupi can be anywhere from 6' to 9' of pstem.

PH (medium probability of fruit) will be the biggest, tallest plant in your patch (bigger than Nawma) unless you have a Saba so take that into consideration i.e. he may shade other plants. He needs a lot of space.

I'm not familiar with Sumatrana or Black Thai other than I don't think they are considered edible bananas.

I agree with Akula. I got a Veinte Cohol this year specifically because it's supposed to be the fastest growing/fruiting (and ripening) banana. Supposedly all in the same year from a pup.
I'm super excited for it but I'm growing it from a TC so it might take a while.

I know you also like to grow in the whiskey barrels so you could get a Veinte Cohol for that and something else for that spot...

Thai black or Sumatrana.
Both have an impressive presence once the mat matures and are a great conversation starter.
Great way to break up the red carpet with color.
But you have those nice Bordelons too.

For me VC and Patupi did not tolerate the short grow season and zone 5/6 temps.
You might have to pull the plants for winter storage.
Both plants pulled back when daylight was under 12 hours and avg temp was in the low 70's.

Both plants thrive in tropical conditions though.

I have decided what to plant. A little while in the pot and in the ground it goes. The name is Babe, as in Babe the Blue Ox, from the Paul Bunyan stories.

Yes a blue java. I believe it will take off like a rocket.

By the way the orinoco has popped off 5 leaves already. It's really been banana weather around here since March. Crazy.

That pup definitely looks like it'll take off! It's a monster pup!

My VC tissue culture took almost exactly 12 months from TC to fruit. It fruited at about 4 feet, but i cut it back after winter to clear a choke. Its follower is same size as fruited plant currently and will be a better indication of actual fruiting size/time. That follower was a nub when i wrapped the plant for winter, so it has grown almost full size since march, with just MOP because the fruiting mother plant.

My VC tissue culture is about 2.5 months old and 2ft tall already so I put it on the ground already. The extra heat and sun is hurting it a bit but it's under a shade so it should adjust. Hope I can get mine to fruit too.

Mine is planted is one of the less sunny spots in my yard. It gets prob 4-5 hrs a day.. Mine started slow in a pot.. but got down to business once in the ground. Ill be curious to see if its pup fruits soon.

Ok my VC has been looking good in it's first pot as have all 12 of the TCS I got in March. As I mentioned I really push them as far as sunlight is concerned and move them to a somewhat shadier spot behind some other plants if they look a little stressed but in my yard I have learned that they don't need much pampering. Charleston is hot but it's not Texas or Florida so I guess that's the difference. I'm getting the VC and a couple of others in the ground somewhere asap.

Did you happen to get your TC VC from wellspring gardens? I have a regular VC that looks nothing like the TC VC. Also, the TC had wine stains as a young pup, which made me think it might be an AAB like a Raja Puri. It’s currently over 4’ now and stacking leaves.

I got my TC from Wellspring Gardens and it's been completely green - no wine stains

Well that’s good! Wanted to hear from others that have bought VC from there. I have a friend that also bought some and his are like mine with wine stains. Mine actually looks like it just pushed a pre flag leaf this morning, so hopefully we’ll find out what it actually is soon. Here’s a pic.

Good luck and good choice using the Blue Java. Mine is about 18” tall with 6 leaves. I have a praying hands tc that I bought from urban tropicals last summer that’s a little over 3’ now. Not growing nearly as fast as the blue java.

Did your plant ripen the same as a non TC VC? Still Short filling time? My Non TC VC is much taller than the one that’s pre flagging right now and it hasn’t even started the “terminal leaf stacking” yet.

No I got it from Larry. Ive seen winestains on several different varieties of young plants, including mysore. The only thing i ever bought from wellspring was a blue java aka namwah..
