Pisang Klotek owners please check in.

Could all the people who have recieved Pisang Klotek pups from me please submit a progress report. Is it alive, has it pupped, has it fruited, growing ground or container, organic or conventionally grown, greenhouse or roughing it, things of that nature. Thanks in advance!

Harvey I know yours didn't make it. I'll get you another as soon as my waiting list is cleared. Should be sometime this summer. I cleared (thinned) the stand at the end of last summer to hopefully get bigger bunches,(guess it worked!) but now I'm not seeing many pups so far this year.

Re: Pisang Klotek owners please check in.

Mine was severly dehydrated when it arrived. There was a reschedule of delivery as I remember. Took major surgery to stop choking and black rot. It's still alive and potted, but lost a bunch of leaves due to the recent cold snaps in S Fla. Even though it went in the garage with the other potted ones - 4 times ----- man, what a winter we had in S Fla this year!!!

Went from 4 ft long to 6 inches of green/brown mushy growth 2 months after potting. Brought it back slowly with minimal water and vermeeeeeeeecompost!! Then came the cold. When I get sick I'll have a bag vermee nearby to sniff at now and then.

Recent repotting and application of Vermicompost and K-Mag look promising. It's now at 5 ft and slowly growing a second good big leaf. Recent warmer weather and time will tell. Hoping for the best.

In ground last Summer. Growth was relatively slow, but no obvious issues. Came through winter fine and looking forward to taking off this season.

Re: Pisang Klotek owners please check in.

Mine survived the winter with some damage, but I cut it back a bit and it's putting out a new leaf! So it looks like she will be growing nicely. No pups yet, but with the amount of winter damage she had, I expect it will be sending out some pups any time now.
You did a great job packing and shipping it. It was in perfect condition upon arrival. Thanks again!

Mine was lush all summer and grew up to 5 feet with lots of leaves.
I was overseas last December/January and when I came back all the leaves were brown but the pstem was still green. I still covered it with clear plastic. I removed the plastic last week and I think it will recover.

Mitchel

Mine was growing so well in the summer but now I am sad to say that my Pisang Klotek had passed away in it's container while growing outside in my yard. This winter here has been down in the low 30*F at night. The rain and the storms have brought some bad growing conditions here sorry to say.

Mine did very well last summer growing to 3 feet before leaves. It was happy in the ground for the summer and has since retreated to indoors to a pot. It did little under lights and was put to rest with the other plants into the dormancy room...where of course it has done nothing. All indications are it will come through its first canadian winter just fine. It will go back in the ground once the snow disappears and the soil warms up. When it was planted last year in the ground iI backfilled the area around it with a cattle manure/sand mix...seems to have worked.
to be continued.....

Overgrown, where (and in what zone) are you located?

Thanks,

Harvey

Hey Harvey,

I'm in Zone 10 I believe. The PK is growing in Rowland Hts, Ca 91748. The PK is doing great and amazes me with the leaves its pushing out (currently holding 10). It is growing in amended adobe clay, right next to a 20ft king palm. I'm sure it has a lot to do with the positioning of where I planted it (NW side of house and protected from harsh afternoon sun). I'll put pictures up soon.

Thanks, Peter. I hope to try this variety again and I am wondering if it can take my USDA zone 9b (Sunset 14) climate with some freezing temperatures. Yours sure looks nice!

Well I planted another really large pup in early fall and it's starting to grow now so soon I'll have more pups and fruit to share. :)

Mine did great Mitch, I did however give it away to a friend last year.
Great to read about everyone's success with it.

My PK survived 9 days of frost damage including the 3 pups. Gotta chance at fruit for the first time this year as the big one was lost in Jan '09 cold snaps.

Peeled back the pups and they are ok too.

Re: Pisang Klotek owners please check in.

Mine was looking very nice until late summer when my bulldog decided to rip away a quarter of the pseudo stem in pursuit of a lizard... As fall approached I made the decision to chop it down to the corm to avoid problems w/ upcoming santa ana winds. I live in NYC most of the time now so I just potted it the corm and left it. Just this year on my last visit, I separated two pups and potted them up.

Here is a pic of the original corm, you can see a third pup was forming and my size 9.5" size foot for size reference.

And a pic of the two pups potted up alongside some cycads.
