Pisang Ambon, Pisang Raja update

Hi,

Good news:goteam: after 1.5 month my Pisang Ambon from Indonesia started to show off new growth!!!!! I'm so excited!
Unfortunately the Pisang Raja looks terrible :(
I\'ve never had pups like this, the Raja looks it\'s point has no opening at the top side. How will a new leave come out? I\'m a bit afraid to cut it off. I try to keep it dry, and it indeed, no water comes out the top&side. Does this one has a chance of survival? How do I have to treat it? Any help will be appreciated!

Hey Mar
these are good news.
Dont warry about Pisang Raja it will sprout as soon as it feels ready, maybe even with new pup instead that one. As I can see from picture it is a live. Have U checked the roots? One of mine IC corms was like that for a long time and pushing all energy in one single root. Funny, right? Now its forming new litlle horn and prepare to pop up from the side of old pup.
It will be fine ;).

i think your pisang raja still good. i also have TC plant pisang ambon (white and yellow) and pisang raja also.

Re: Pisang Ambon, Pisang Raja update

Nice job Marguerite, measure the black part length every day and if it starts spreading further to the corm, cut it away. I lost one plant due to not measuring and seeing the rot progress. Good Luck. :D
Always nice to see a new pup emerging from a rare corm.

Re: Pisang Ambon, Pisang Raja update

By all means cut the brown portion of the top of the raja if you feel it has rooted in properly. It looks from the base that its ready to pop. I've done this 4 or 5 times now with plants that were stubborn about coming out and the results were outstanding.....100% so far. I had one Burmese blue that I didn't do this to because I was new to this last year and it never did pop out of the top. It did put out a nice pup though and grew from that.

As usual if you're tired of looking at Pisang Ambon, you know where to send it:ha:( a man can dream!)

Thanks for the update, keep them coming.

What size pot have you got it in Marenmar. The pot looks a lot larger than the corm.Have you added perlite to the soil to open it up as i cant see any in the pics.

Re: Pisang Ambon, Pisang Raja update

:03:Hi everyone, many thanks for your support & replies!

@ Jack,
The black part is growing, for sure  That's why I cut off the other "leave parts" (so I could look what was inside).

@BOB,
Not sure about the roots, but when I put it in this pot, the "old"root showed tiny white branches. I think by now (1.5 month later) it should have developed mor roots.

If I cut it off, wouldn't it just get brown and rot more and more? (am just affraid that the same process will happen again). When I cut it, do I only have to keep it dry or do I also need some fungicide?

I know I know, but I'm not tired yet :D LOL

@Mushtaq86

It's in a 19 Litre/5 Gallon/40 Pint pot. I used special, well draining soil (best available) It's very light, and when you push on it it kinda bounces back. I also added perlite (maybe not as much, as you couldn't trace it ;) )
The part of the corm under the soil is quite large D=15cm/6inches.

Re: Pisang Ambon, Pisang Raja update

You have to cut/peel it to healthy tissue. Otherwise it will start rotting along the P-stem and you own't win the fight. Do small slices, 0,5cm deep until you are sure there's only healthy tissue below. Sometimes it happened to me that there was a completely healthy tissue and 5cm below it was a rotting ball, so the naner didn't grow. You have to locate and cut off the lowest rotting point. If you do that, the cut wound will seal and get brown/black, but iit will show signs of new growth within a week.
If you don't remove it, you risk spreading that rot also to corm.

Re: Pisang Ambon, Pisang Raja update

Thanks Jack :) , I'll do that. Did you use any fungicide? Dit you remove the water which comes out the plant when you cut it?

No fungicide at all. Cut wound on the banana tissue will make it release some water-like preservant that seals the wound. It then gets darker and is completely dry.
Maybe a fungicide might help, I haven't tried that.

Re: Pisang Ambon, Pisang Raja update

Marenmar, definitely cut it just till you see the green showing. I just now did it with the Bluefields and once you expose the green portion to the light they tend to start growing right away. The Pisang Raja looks to be sealed tight on top. If there's one thing I learned for sure over the last year is that this technique works very well and you shouldn't be afraid to do it. It will just start growing all that much faster.

Re: Pisang Ambon, Pisang Raja update

Nice. It seems to be yellow-green-white, just as it should be. Unless there's some problem even further below the point you cut it in, it should seal the wound within 2 days and start growing in week(s) after that. It's like stimulating.
I would even go as far as to remove to side leaf sheets (remnants of the leaves you removed). As a dying tissue they might be quite susceptible to rot.

Glad to see the "Holy Grail" is up and growing well. The Pisang Raja looks like it "tried" to put on some growth and stopped for some reason. maybe an increase in temerature would help.

Marguerite , the Pisang Ambon seems to be well on its way. Just baby it till it becomes a "real" banana plant and you've got it made.
I've had a few that have behaved like the Pisang Raja( some currently in the front porch), from the picture it seems to be ok maybe it just needs to develop some roots before the top grows. Keep it warm and properly watered and it should be fine. Well done!:goteam:

Hi Jack!!!
Everything is fine here:D Ambon's doing great! Second big leaf's out:woohoonaner:
Since a few days it's snowing like never before (last time was in '81)!!!!
15cm layer is on the street. People here are not used to it so: public transport is a chaos, traffic jams and car crashes, slidings all over the place. Today I went to work by bike on the big road "car tracks":).
Here;s a pic of the nanner's view outside the window:

btw, this car isn't a Dodge Ram Van...or a Caddy Escalade.....it's a Fiat Punto;)!

Hi,
it's doing "something" but it is still looking more or less the same:) so, that isn't bad either! Besides, with more light every day from now, I keep my hopes up!!

Re: Pisang Ambon, Pisang Raja update

Ambon is looking better all the time. I notice my bananas really start perking up in February indoors and maybe the Raja will as well. Of course any additional light and heat wouldn't hurt either.

Surprised to hear you don't get snow that often in Netherlands...not that I know a thing about your country other than it's far north of my latitude( I get lots of snow). I would guess by looking at the map that it is affected by the gulf stream and has a similar climate to the UK. Is that about right?

That last sentence pretty much sums it up. ;) Including the windiness.

Hi Marguerite, they're looking great. I was worried about the pisang raja but now it's in the clear and should do well. If you dont have a big enough pot for the "Ambon" I do so feel free to send:ha:
