Pink Bananas

Went to the Atlanta Botanical Garden this weekend to check out their carnivorous plants collections (Venus flytraps, pitcher plants, drosera, neps).

Saw plenty of banana trees but this one really caught my eye.

Can it survive in zone 8?

Absolutely it can! We have about 10-15 of those flowering now 35 miles northeast of Atlanta on the border of 7b and 8a. They grow like weeds and survive the winter with just light mulch/pine straw. You probably don't even have to do anything to them and they will live through the winter.

I believe I have that one growing in deep shade but I don't know the name. What is it called?

It is Musa velutina.

Thanks for releasing my memories. That is the variety that I have. I think I got mine from Coast Crab in Mobile Al.

I would say mine are self sustaining but they definitely aren't going to take over the bed. Like all my bananas this year that bloomed there were not many nanas showing after the bloom and the hands were not filled out. I may need a bee hive.

I have two small Velutinas that I got from Annie's Annuals. They were really small when I got them but when I moved from the Seattle area to San Diego once again, I literally smashed one of them accidentally and the pseudostem was hanging on by a small root only. It survived and now it's like 1.5 foot tall now. I have to transplant them. I hope they bloom this winter here in San Diego.

grow well in zone 7 and survive winter with no help if well established also once established the grow like weeds I have a dozen or so flowering now started mine from seed also can be eaten but not very good and full of seeds
