Despite the body blow, Patupi was able to suck it up and rally into the first winter freeze with two leaves and surprisingly threw out a flower! However it was not to be as the weight of the frost cloth after a heavy rain caused the weakened and thin top of the plant to snap off! Foiled again!

This year we are starting the season at 36", a nice thick pstem and a total of 11 leaves (three just collapsed) vs. last year at this time at 28" and ten leaves. We have an eight inch better start! Who says, size doesn't matter? Yeah, baby! Last year the plant averaged 17" of growth per month between April and August so if we can keep to that pace, Patupi has an expected target of 104" by mid September. Last year the flower emerged at a height of 92". Hopefully this will be Lucky Year 3! No hurricanes!

Everyone is more than welcome to post of pics and info about their Patupi in this thead. Post'em if you got'em!

Looks good! You should definitely be able to get some fruit off of it this year!

My Patupi looks a lot like yours did to start the season last year.

[IMG][/IMG]

Can I ask how you got it through the winter? Is it a pup from last year that you overwintered inside or is it a new pup this spring from the same corm?

I just got mine last September and got it through the winter in a pot. I've heard varied reports of its cold tolerance (or lack thereof) and am just kinda wondering how it's been in your experience.

No problem. The banana plant's parts, name, and function:
https://www.promusa.org/Morphology+o...+plant#Rhizome

I think of the corm as an active pathway and a reserve of energy and nutients the plant accumulates. These nutrients are available to either the main plant and/or to the plants and its suckers. Suckers which are connected to the main corm grow much faster and stronger than those disconnected from the corm. The main plant also grows faster in the absence of having to share its reserves with other plants.

In the pic, the plant's starte off about the same size but after separating the left one from the sucker it no longer has the extra nutrients so it grows slower and since the one on the right is no longer sharing nutrients it grows faster.

There was a small pup that appeared late winter which I wrapped in an entire string of C9 Christmas lights and covered with frost cloth. I turned the lights on when temps were below 40F. When I uncovered in late March it was about a foot or so with a couple small leaves. I think the main thing is to cover the plant in a thick cover. The grounds provides a pretty good amount of heat when they are that short.

Your plant looks great but "short cycle" is relative. You have to stay on top of your fertilzier game and keep all the pups trimmed off. Even in S.F. you need to get the flower by late November probably. Once below 60F Patupi hits the brakes. Big difference for me this year vs. last year is that I cut the extra pup off immediately this year after uncovering vs. last year I didn't cut it off till late April because I was growing it for a guy.

Thanks! Mine had a couple of tiny suckers when it was still in the pot, but they both eventually stopped growing and withered away. I'll definitely keep it pup-free because I know that it's gonna be close for me this year.

I've been fertilizing it every month or so but I'm going to start upping that. It hasn't had any leaf curl/thinness/burn issues so it seems to be able to handle the fertilizer pretty well.

I haven't noticed any fertilizer issues either and I give it 5 oz of urea and 4 oz of postassium sulfate or muriate of potash each month. He seems like he can take it so far. I'm getting a leaf a week.

Update

My patupi took a face plant after TS Claudette yesterday. I replanted yesterday evening after the winds had died down and measured him at 63" of pstem height. The 2020 Patupi was measured at 62" on July 19th so I am one month ahead of last year"s growth to date.

Hopefullly the plant can rally from the shock/damage and get some good growth over the rest of the season. Last year he averaged 18" of growth per month over July and August.

Next update with a pic in a month.

Oh gosh, sorry to hear about that Akula.... Hope you can get a decent pup to produce fruit in one season!

Since you asked in another post, here's what my patupi did. Flowered indoors in March and the bunch slowly filled in. Quite small but it was neat to watch.

Awesome! Have you eaten them yet? Those bananas look pretty plump. If you harvested, did you wait for one to turn yellow or harvest green? I heard that Patupi only turn yellow after harvesting them. Not sure if that's true or not.

Don't forget to give us a taste test report and any other cool detials!

My plant although haggard is still in the running. I'll post an update next month to see how it reovers.

Thanks for posting up your photo!

Update!

Looks like my patupi has recovered from his faceplant from TS Claudette and as of today has a pstem height of 82'. Way to recover little dude! This time last year patupi was 62' of height so a 20' gain over 2020. Not bad!

After the last topple I added a hefty stake which is barely visible to help the plant to stand and recover.

Its been raining non-stop for almost a month so that has helped growth quite a bit over last year I'm sure. Getting tired of the rain!

Glad to see it has recovered after the latest toppling. I've read that a lot of members here have struggled with this type, saying that it's a really finnicky one. Yours seems to be pretty darn resilient though! Definitely looking like you'll be getting fruit this year!

A quick update on mine while I'm at it: it has grown decently quickly and it's a really elegant and healthy-looking plant, but with it being only around 5 feet I've accepted it's almost certainly not going to fruit before the cold sets in. Unfortunately I didn't put it in the best of spots. Already planning my overwintering tactics...

Thanks 75!

Yeah, the plant has had a tough time. I have had greater than the usual number of storms and wind this year so unfortunately most of my plants have damaged leaves vs. other years. Your patupi looks beautiful! I miss that full leaf look.

This is the third year so it seems the corm has accumulated enough power to push the main plant despite all the setbacks. Hopefully this will be the year!

If your plant is at 5' of pstem I think you have a good shot at a flower by the beginning of October but keep on top of your fertilizer program. Probably about 75% probability. I got a flower last year at 96" of height so I have another 14" which would put me at late August for a flower. No hurricanes!!!

You're definitely on track to get fruit this year. Often there's just no substitute for time, and the fact that it's taken a few years is gonna make that first taste that much better!

And yeah, I put it in a spot where it's protected from the wind but unfortunately it's also blocked out from the sun by the corner of the house, so it misses out on a few hours of sunlight every day. I considered moving it to a sunnier spot but hesitated because of fear of transplant shock. It might still be worth it, who knows?

Hi Akula,

Congrats on the Patupi recovery! Looks like you are in the running for some fruit in the future.

I am sorry, I didn't see your prior message. Yes, we did eat the fruits and they did turn slightly yellow while still attached to the p-stem. Since I only had one harvest, I had time to check the fruit daily. I waited until you could feel the largest fruits had soften before cutting them off.

Picture attached... This was a medium sized fruit from my 'harvest' and the taste on these was amazing. To be honest, the fruit tasted so good that I will continue to grow this type even though it is hard to grow and takes 3 years to fruit in Pennsylvania.... The peels were fairly green, the fruit color was orange and had a nice aroma, the taste was sweet and creamy.

Hope you can experience these soon!

Erik

Thanks Eric!

Very nice presentation! Looks like Orange Sherbert inside a banana peel. Fingers crossed I will get the same opportunity a bit later this year.

Thanks for providing a great visual and a taste report!

That you can get it to fruit at all in Pennsylvania is awesome. Good work. Gives me hope for mine in South Carolina.
