29 degrees. holy cow manure batman.

well the 29 degrees might have knocked your namwas back abit but the namwas should be coming back with the weather were going to have for the next few weeks.

sorry about the loss on the namwa buches tho.

so goes the life of the farmer.

Hey Beam!

The leaves on my namwas got completely toasted but I think the bunches made it through and are still alive or at least none of the bunches have turned black and its been eight days since the freeze. I plan to harvest Godzilla namwa's bunch this afternoon and will post up a photo.

looking forward to it.

2 winters ago I experienced 2 straight weeks of freeze. but my namwas did better with that than last year with 1 light freeze and a frost once a week from the middle of December. they were looking good until march, the ones 8 ft and better were putting out leaves then wam 2 light frosts and it pretty well much decimated everything. namwas still haven't come back very well from that.

Unfortunately no. It didn't survive the second wave of overnight freezes we had January 21 (29F) and 22 (32F). We had clear skies both nights and with the canopy burned off during the first freeze it was naked to the radiated cold/heat. I usually prepare an elaborate winterization program but I injured my back that week deadlifting and was laid up.

So is the above-ground part of the plant dead, or the whole thing?

Too early to tell about the plant. Fingers crossed.

I was back in the gym squating, benching, etc. this week after buying a belt. No more beltless squats and deadlifts. No deadlifts yet.

Sorry to hear about your back injury and potential plant loss. That stinks. I still have my patupi and its doing pretty well in my living room. Hopefully it will hang on till springtime....

Take care of that back! The corm should be fine! Only allow 1 pup to grow and remove the rest all year. It should pup, flower, and fill before next winter. They make it most years here unless we get an early frost or something! Keep us updated!

The original Patupi didn't make it. He got killed by the second low temp dip we had in January afer surviving the early November freeze. Thought he was going to make it. Dang it!!

The original is dead (can be seen between the pups when zoomed) but he sired two pups which made it through the winter to continue the saga. I dug up the entire corm and moved it to a better location after prepping the soil with six bags of black cow. This new Patupi Only Patch is in front of my large orange tree to protect it on the North side and it gets full sun from the South from 8 am till 5 pm.

I will wait a month to see which pup is the stronger then separate the weaker from the main corm. Planning to juice the Patupi to the maximum with fertilizer to push it hard. I figure I have a two month head start over the prior year, an established corm, and a better spot with less competition.

Update as of May 19, 2020

Patupi is now 28" in height with 10 leaves plus a cigar. Much thicker in the pstem at this point in the year vs. last year. I separated the small pup on the left from the original corm and it sent into a decline with a lot of leaf damage. Now it has two new small leaves.

Looking good Akula.. hoping to see that patupi take off this year. BTW those pups you gave me never even wilted a leaf after transplant.. I think the two overcast/rainy days were just the ticket to get them acclimated! Thanks!

Update!

Patupi is now at 62" of pstem. This time last year the original was at 30" so pretty big improvement. I feel like I have a pretty good shot at getting some fruit this year. Might start adding a bit more fertilizer as I have not seen any telltale signs of overfertilization. I've been feeding him monthly the same full dose I give my big namwas and so far no "crinkly" leaf impressions.

Update!

Patupi is up to 80" as of today. This time last year the plant (prior) achieved 60" by this time so I'm up 20" of growth from the prior year at the same time. The new patch with almost maximum sun is helping out tremendously. Looks like it might be starting to form a crown/stack out. Fingers crossed!!
